The very popular ATV rider, Shaun Gunther, who made inroads in the South African motorsport world, passed away on Thursday 29 August. Shaun was diagnosed earlier in 2013 with Synovial Sarcoma, a rare virulent cancer. Shaun passed away in a Pretoria hospital where he was treated. He leaves behind his wife Tamara and two daughters, Morgan (5) and Sienna (2)
Shaun was one of the most successful ATV racers in South African motorsport and the only ATV rider at that stage to receive national colours for the discipline. Throughout his career, he was one of the most popular competitors around due to his kind and friendly nature. Off the bike, Shaun was the perfect gentleman and everybody loved him. He always had time for a chat and treated everybody around him with respect. This made him immensely popular among fellow riders, organisers, sponsors and fans.
As a racer, he was fiercely competitive and knew very few equals. Shaun won the 2003 and 2007 national ATV off-road championships. He also won several regional championships.
The characteristics of a true champion were all entrenched in Shaun. He had brute natural talent, incredible discipline and worked really hard to achieve success. As a Honda Race Nation rider, whose motto was “never back down”, Shaun’s mental strength was the true personification of this statement. He never gave up, and even in the face of impossible adversity this year, Shaun kept on fighting this cancer all the way to the end. This is how he lived his life and also how he raced.
We are proud to have been associated with him and will remember Shaun as a true champion and gentleman. Shaun was a Honda SA sponsored athlete in 2006 and 2007
Our sincere condolences go out to his wife, daughters; and also his brothers, sister and parents. We hold you in our thoughts. His family will be hosting a celebration of life for Shaun on Saturday 7 September at Dawn Mountains Farm near Paarl.
