Volkswagen South Africa trainees honoured in Germany

The Volkswagen Group recently presented its ‘Best Trainee Award 2014’ to its top young achievers from all over the world. Two of Volkswagen Group South Africa’s (VWSA) employees, Fanisile Momo and Simone Starkey, were among the 43 talent recipients at this year’s international awards.

The accolades for performance excellence and specialist competence during dual vocational training were presented to Volkswagen Group’s young employees from 18 different countries.  In recognition of their achievements, the award winners were invited to Germany to participate in an exciting multi-faceted programme spanning several days.

After a stringent internal selection process – where competency, efficiency and initiative were evaluated – the applicants were shortlisted and thereafter assessed through interviews.

“Working at VWSA has helped me cement a good work ethic and has motivated me to take initiative within my work environment. I have been exposed to challenging projects, which has given me more confidence in my abilities,” said Simone Starkey.

Starkey is now working as a Dealer Network Management Analyst at Volkswagen’s National Sales Organisation (NSO) in Sandton. The award was however based on her previous work at the Uitenhage manufacturing plant as a Production Purchasing buyer.

“It was been a great honour receiving this award and the experience of traveling overseas was amazing. Meeting so many people from different countries has truly broadened my outlook and put into perspective, the stature of the Volkswagen Group,” concluded Starkey.

Fanisile Momo, who is a Tool-setter in Engine Plant, has been working at VWSA for the past 10 years. Last year he qualified as a Mechatronics Technician through VWSA’s Technical Learning Academy.

“I could not believe it when I was selected to go to Germany to receive a Best Trainee Award.  I really worked hard and am humbled by the international recognition,” affirmed Momo.

Chairman of the Board of Management of Volkswagen Group, Prof. Dr. Martin Winterkorn, presented the awards in Germany and commented: “I am proud of the competence of our young employees. We are honouring the best of the best from the Volkswagen World.  All of the award winners have demonstrated high commitment, excellent specialist knowledge and considerable skills during their training. With young specialists like them, we are strengthening the future orientation of our Group.”

The awards are held every year and have been running for the past 14 years with VWSA trainees receiving sixteen Best Trainee Awards during that period.
