Volkswagen Sasolracing Team Ready for Final Round of the National Rally Season
Just one event remains for the 2013 season of the national rally championship, the Garden Route Rally, starting from the Garden Route Mall in George on Friday, November 15. With seven rallies already complete, the Volkswagen Sasolracing Rally Team is prepared for the final showdown of the season.
For Henk Lategan and Barry White this event might be the season finale, but it is hardly the last time that Lategan will be behind the wheel in 2013. The pair have competed both locally and internationally this year and Lategan has also been selected as a wildcard entry to the FIA's Young Driver Excellence Academy.
This selection makes Lategan one of two South Africans selected for the academy. The other is Kelvin van der Linde who won the single-make Polo Cup series in South Africa in 2011 and won the 2012 Scirocco R-Cup championship in Germany this year.
“Both of these FIA-selected drivers are from the local Volkswagen pool of racing talent.” says Mike Rowe, head of Volkswagen Motorsport. “Van der Linde, Lategan and Polo Cup racers Tasmin Pepper and Robyn Kruger have all been selected for FIA events this year, proving that South African competitors have world-class talent.”
Ahead of Lategan and White on the championship standings is Hergen Fekken and Pierre Arries. Fekken and Arries have been working on a strong finish to the season. The pair have produced two podium finishes in a row, at the Toyota Cape Dealer Rally and the Polokwane Rally. With one final round, the pair are determined to make it three podiums in a row as they finish the 2013 season.
Enzo Kuun and Douglas Judd will be aiming to build on a good performance from the penultimate round. Kuun and Judd recovered from a puncture in the first stage that left them 17th in the standings, working up to eighth overnight and crossing the line fifth by the end of the event.
In the S2000 Challenge entry Gugu Zulu and Carl Peskin will campaign their Volkswagen Sasolracing Polo Vivo for the final time this season. The pair are working towards a good result as they tackle the last 186 km of national rally competition for this year.
