THE Volkswagen Sasolracing rally team will be in action at round six of the South African National Rally Championship in the Western Cape.
Friday and Saturday, 19 and 20 September, will see the Volkswagen Sasolracing Polo S2000s of Hans Weijs Jnr, Björn Degandt, Henk Lategan, Barry White, Gugu Zulu and Carl Peskin taking on the stages of the Toyota Cape Dealer Rally. The team will see action over 160 km of tar and gravel stages that make up the two-day event.
“The fast stages that wait in the Western Cape will see the Volkswagen Sasolracing team pushing the pace,” says Mike Rowe, head of Volkswagen Motorsport. “Hans and Björn are fourth overall in the championship with three rallies left in the season, we are expecting they will be hard at work to produce a good result here.”
Lategan and White will be equally active out on the stages, in fifth place overall in the championship standings they need just eight points to equal second place. With Lategan and White amongst the pace setters in the Cape, they could pose a serious threat to their competition in the final rounds of the season.
“Henk and Barry finished just off the podium at the last event in Gauteng,” says Rowe. “With a smooth approach to the stages for the next round their teamwork can deliver the results which will see them finish with a podium result.”
Currently Zulu and Peskin find themselves in seventh spot heading into round six of the eight-round championship – with their focus being on moving into the top five with strong results in the remaining rounds. “The rallies in the Western Cape feature good roads which mean really fast stages,” says Rowe. “We’ve prepared the Volkswagen Sasolracing Polo S2000s for the expected conditions to provide our drivers and navigators with the tools they need to produce good results. We are looking forward to an exciting and very tough event at this round of the national championship.”
