Volkswagen East London Racing the next challenge

The Comsol VW Challenge gets back on track after an eight week break on 19th July 2014 when the series heads for the historic East London Grand Prix circuit for the fifth round of the 2014 championship. With a large contingent of competitors making their way down to the coastal circuit from Gauteng, East London’s motor racing fans will be treated to some spectacular action on the 3.921 km long track.

James Hurley (The Starter Pack Company Polo) leads the overall championship log by 12 points from class B leader Darren Nathan (Sex Trader Polo) with teenager Lyle Ramsay a further 8 point back in his unsponsored Polo.

Hurley, who’s run of victories came to an end at Kyalami in May, does not have fond memories of his last visit to the East London circuit. He ended his day parked in the barrier after trying to avoid a car that was stranded on the circuit after a spin. He will be looking to get back to winning ways and extend his class A championship lead over Rory Atkinson (Comsol Polo), the only man to have beaten him this season. Waldies Meintjies had a great deal of work to do to his Performance Masters / Marty’s Body & Spray Polo after hitting the wall in the second race at Kyalami and will be looking to improve on his third place in the class A championship.

Ramsay had a perfect outing last time out at Kyalami taking the class B pole, winning both races and setting fastest lap in each to take the maximum available haul of 23 championship points. He will be looking for a repeat performance but will have some serious opposition. Nathan won the class B title last year and still has an eight point lead over Ramsay headed for East London while the vastly experienced Henry van Vledder will be looking to get his Golf up to the sharp end of the field.

In class C Francios van Zyl (Jesus Saves Golf) has a slender three point lead over Elke van Vledder (Golf) at the top of the log. The pair have been fighting for the lead of the championship all season but Jacques Smith (Ambilube / ELB Construction / UTI Logistics Polo), who took his maiden win at the Phakisa event at the end of April, is starting to become a serious challenger.

Qualifying is scheduled to start at 09h25 on Saturday morning with the first of the two ten-lap races getting underway at 12h55. The cars will be on track for the second race at 16h10.
