Motor sport fans will be able to watch a 30-minute daily highlights report of the 2012 Dakar Rally on SuperSport television, brought to you by Toyota South Africa. Toyota Hilux 2012 Dakar

Heading up a strong South African presence in the world’s longest and toughest motor race are Toyota Motorsport’s two Hilux 4×4 double cab pickups, backed by IMPERIAL Toyota, Duxbury Netgear and the Innovation Group and driven by former South African off road champion and 2009 Dakar Rally winner Giniel de Villiers and four-time national off road champion Duncan Vos.

Multiple former national off road motorcycle and car champion Alfie Cox will be at the wheel of a privately-entered Swedish-built 4×4 Volvo XC60 and Mark Corbett will be driving his own locally-built, two-wheel drive CR4 buggy, which is powered by a V8 Toyota engine. In addition there are five South Africans entered in the motorcycle category on KTMs: Iain Stevenson, Neil Scott-Williams, Darryl Curtis, Dean Nuttall and Greg Raaff.

The Dakar Rally starts in Argentina on January 1 and finishes in Peru on January 15 and the daily highlights will premier each night at 22.00. Each of the 14 special stages that make up the 4 200 kilometre race route (five in Argentina, five in Chile and four in Peru) will be featured on SuperSport with highlights of the first week to be screened on the rest day on January 8.

Each night’s highlights will be repeated several times during the following day, starting at 07.00.

The organisers of the Dakar Rally, the French ASO organisation, are renowned for the extensive and high quality coverage of the Dakar Rally each year. In 2011, there were more than 1 200 hours of TV coverage by 70 broadcasters in 190 countries, including South Africa.

The stunning images that bring the rally action and drama and the beauty of the South American landscapes into our living rooms are provided by four TV helicopters and six land cameras on each special stage.

The dates are subject to change. Please check the latest DStv guide or your daily newspaper for updated details.
