Monster Energy SuperGP Champions Trophy ranked #1 motorsport programme on television after just one broadcast
The Monster Energy SuperGP Champions Trophy live broadcast on SABC 3 during round five in Durban on August 24th achieved a peak audience of over 816 000 viewers with an average live audience 376 per cent greater than that achieved by Formula 1’s live coverage across the last three grands prix.
This outstanding achievement by the national motorcycle championship in its new-for-2014 all-motorcycle race meeting format means that the one-hour live broadcast that will now be a feature of the championship in future is the #1 television motorsport programme in South Africa after just one broadcast.
“The research, independently conducted on our behalf by the respected Repucom media monitoring organisation, indicates that the average television audience achieved in the first live broadcast of the Monster Energy SuperGP Champions Trophy far exceeded that of any other national or international motorsport broadcast so far this year,” said an elated Stephen Watson, Executive Director of GAS Sports, the managers and promoters of the national motorcycle championship.
“We managed to outperform Formula 1’s live coverage across the last three grands prix – in Germany (Hockenheimring), Hungary (Hungaroring) and Belgium (Spa-Francorchamps). “We are naturally delighted with these results. For the first time in a great many years, thanks to SABC, we were able to bring a live national championship motor race to the fans on free-to-air television. For the remainder of the season, which includes three more rounds – the next round is at Zwartkops Raceway west of Pretoria on Sunday (September 14) – SABC 3 will feature the Monster Energy SuperGP Champions Trophy live between 15h00 and 16h00.” The one-hour programme opens with a snapshot of the Super600 races before screening the whole of the main Monster Energy SuperGP race live.
