The Iconic Sports Sedan now more efficient than ever

Additional BMW EfficientDynamics technologies available for the BMW 3 Series Sedan.

Midrand – The BMW 3 Series Sedan already offers South African drivers the best possible balance between performance and economy, thanks to BMW EfficientDynamics.

However, with the incorporation of additional BMW EfficientDynamics technologies into the vehicles, the BMW 320d, 323i, 325i and 330i (320i from January 2011) are now even more efficient than ever before. Consequently, the addition of these EfficientDynamics technologies further improves CO2 emissions, reducing the Carbon Emissions Tax payable on these vehicles.

With EfficientDynamics, BMW has established a close connection between driving performance, fuel consumption and weight. Strategic innovations in the areas of drive systems, lightweight construction, aerodynamics and energy management have allowed BMW to resolve the conflict of interest regarding these factors. Maximum performance at minimum consumption is the goal for each engine and each vehicle BMW develops.
Whilst all 6-cylinder BMW 3 Series models have featured the on-demand operation of engine ancillary units (map controlled water and oil pumps) since launch in 2005, many other BMW EfficientDynamics measures have not been implemented in South Africa on the BMW 3 Series up until now.

Now all BMW 3 Series Sedan models, except the BMW 335i and the BMW 330d, will feature Brake Energy Regeneration, along with an automatic coupler for the climate control compressor and map-controlled oil pumps (only on 6-cylinder models) as standard in order to save additional fuel.

In addition, the BMW 320d with manual transmission will also be equipped with a gear-shift point indicator, which shows the driver the optimal point to shift gear for maximum economy.

The end result is an overall fuel consumption figure, in the EU cycle, which decreases from 5.4 litres per 100km to just 4.7 litres per 100km. At the same time, CO2 emissions are reduced from 140g/km to just 125g/km. This is possible in a vehicle with a maximum power output of 135kW and a 0-100km/h sprint time of 7.5 seconds, which speaks volumes for the effectiveness of BMW EfficientDynamics.

Other models in the BMW 3 Series Sedan range show the following improvements:

Thanks to the incorporation of BMW EfficientDynamics technology as standard equipment across its product range since 2002, BMW is now “best in class” when it comes to climate protection and performance. Today, the average carbon emissions per kilometer of the BMW EU fleet equates to 150 grams per kilometer. This corresponds to a fuel consumption of 5.9 liters per 100 kilometres, achieved despite an average performance of 125 kW.

Now the incorporation of just some of these measures, allows BMW to offer the best combination of power, performance, fuel consumption and emissions in the fiercely contested midrange segment.

The changes also offer the truly demanding and progressive customer unparalleled and highly attractive premium features focusing primarily on superior economy and the environment without compromising the sporting driving characteristics so typical of a genuine BMW.
