It’s taken five years but from this week all vehicle categories are under the scope of Type Approval. The journey has been long and, for some, difficult and the full impact may not be known for a while yet. A complex piece of legislation, and rightly criticised for being difficult to interpret, nonetheless the general aim of raising professional standards and improving road safety is sound. The previous patchwork of legislation across the EU has now been swept away and we finally have a more or less level competitive level playing field.

The stage is now set for the implementation of Euro-6 for N1 class vehicles from next year and also very likely changes to Masses and Dimensions. For Heavy Duty Vehicles we have the potential legislation around reducing carbon emissions. And it will be interesting to see how the proposed Ultra-Low Emission Zone for London pans out.

All in all it looks like the next few years are going to be busy here at SMMT.
