The event was run in conjunction with the opening round of the Absa Off Road Championship with heat, dust and a tough and tricky route taking its toll. The Gouveias, in the Gearbox Specialists BAT, came up with a faultless performance to finish around 10 minutes ahead of veteran former national champion Giel Nel and Johan de Klerk in the Portable Shade Zarco Truggy.

It gave the Benoni based Gouveias their second win in Class B with Nel and de Klerk winning Class P. Second in Class B was John Boxhoorn, in a singleseater, who was nearly half an hour behind the Gouveias WPP with Manny Fernandes and Joshua Huyser third in a Sandmaster.

Nel and de Klerk were around a minute ahead of Kobus Bekker and Morne Calitz, in a Raceco, in Class P. Nel/de Klerk and Bekker//Calitz were the only finishers in the class with Ferdie Pieterse/Craig Galvin (Raceco) and Greg Higgins and Jeremy Wood (Portable Shade WPP) among the casualties.

In the Production Vehicle category Hennie Lemmer and Paul Slabbert, in a Mitsubishi Colt, took the overall win and Class D honours. They were the only finishers in the class with Class E winners Ian Boshoff and Douw Grobler, in a Toyota Hilux, also the only crew to see out the distance in Class E.

It was tough going for the four-cylinder Class E entries with Boshoff and Grobler around 20 minutes behind Lemmer and Slabbert.
