Young cool image … vibrant personality … fresh, refined, eye-candy styling, that’s the ALL-NEW RENAULT SANDERO STEPWAY now on dealer showroom floors nationwide.

Since its launch early in 2011, the first generation Sandero Stepway has successfully blazed a red-hot trail significantly popularising the crossover concept in South Africa.

Designed to cope with a wide range of driving conditions, it has conquered many clients’ hearts who have been thrilled by its versatility and practicality and also its cool and attractive look. As a single derivative, the Sandero Stepway has reached over 3 000 sales per annum since 2012 placing it among the Top 10 most sold versions on the SA market.

It’s now 2014 and the game is on, with the all-new Sandero Stepway representing a gigantic leap forward.

“The most obvious differentiation is the typical Renault design treatment, inside and out, which focuses on style, refinement and perceived quality,” says Fabien Payzan, vice-president of marketing and communications at Renault SA. “But the new model also impresses from an engineering perspective with the adoption of the cutting-edge 66kW turbo petrol engine which it shares with Clio, an impressive array of smart technologies as well as best-in-class safety features, all offered as standard.”

Over the last 12 months Renault South Africa has grown dramatically, following the introduction of three very successful new models – Clio, Duster and New Sandero – each recognised for their overall product appeal, technical excellence and outstanding affordability.

“While New Sandero Stepway comes with the most progressive features as standard, we’ve kept the price surprisingly reasonable,” says Niall Lynch, managing director at Renault SA. “This demonstrates that we are determined to continue to drive the change in the car market and clearly, the very demanding South African customer base really appreciates that.”

Young, cool, vibrant, funky yet refined, the New Sandero Stepway takes Renault’s new design identity to the next level. Its upsized diamond-shaped badge suspended within the black front grille works well with the car’s crossover DNA: raised ground clearance (193mm), 16” wheels, front and rear silver skid plates, fog lamps with chrome surroundings, wheel arch trims and roof rails with silver treatment.

Inside the cabin, the quality of the materials used is tangible. To optimise driving pleasure, the dashboard features a sophisticated cluster with chrome detailing around the dials and boasts an array of techno-smart yet practical instrumentation.

A classy leather-clad steering wheel and gear lever knob add that extra look and feel of quality and refinement, while the front seats’ fabric includes a distinctive Stepway signature.

Generously proportioned interior and above-class average floor-to-roof clearance front and back makes for comfortable and roomy seating for five occupants plus luggage while best-in-class boot capacity (292 litres) can be further improved upon thanks to its 60/40 split rear bench.

New Sandero Stepway is available in exclusive Azurite Blue which underscores its young and energetic personality which is amongst four other colours.

Renault was the first manufacturer to introduce Turbo technology to F1 in 1977 and the tools and talents used to design powerful, efficient and reliable F1 power plants have proven to be a key advantage when developing technologically advanced engines for road-going cars. Thanks to this expertise, Renault is, today, the most advanced brand globally with regard to engine downsizing.

JATO Dynamic, in its annual report A Review of New Car CO2 Emissions across Europe 2013, confirmed that Renault is now the best performing brand in terms of fuel efficiency and CO² emissions with a weighted average of 110.1g/km across its line-up.

“The choice we made to fit New Sandero Stepway with our brilliant Turbo 66kW petrol engine is true to the progressive DNA of Renault. Access to highly efficient and technologically advanced engines is no longer the reserve of expensive cars. This is Renault’s stance, globally and in South Africa,” says Payzan.

The new generation three cylinder Turbo 66kW power plant fitted in New Sandero Stepway (and shared with Clio), is highly efficient thanks to its 100% aluminium block, low inertia turbo and variable valve timing (VVT).

It also benefits from a host of innovative solutions transferred from Formula 1 such as Diamond-Like Carbon coatings (high tech surface treatment for engine components ensuring friction reduction) and High Tumble Strategy (optimisation of engine internal aerodynamics allowing better combustion).

With the Turbo 66kW engine under its bonnet, the all-new Sandero Stepway reaches a top speed of 175km/h accelerating from zero to 100km/h in only 11.1 seconds. The spritely personality of the Turbo 66kW engine exudes from its engaging sound as well as its best-in-class responsiveness in all conditions, thanks to its steady low-end torque which reaches a maximum of 135Nm from 2 500rpm, 90% of which is available from 2 000rpm.

“This is particularly evident at the Reef, where the turbo almost offsets the negative effect on the performance generated by the altitude,” explains Wayne van der Merwe, senior product manager at Renault SA.

With the fitment of this cutting-edge Turbo 66kW, New Sandero Stepway outperforms the previous generation model, which was fitted with a 1.6 naturally aspired engine, that offered lower power (64kW) and lower torque level (128Nm), also reached at higher revs (3 000 rpm).

“It performs far better and is significantly lighter on fuel with an almost 2 litre/100km saving,” he adds. Indeed, Renault’s all-new Sandero Stepway Turbo 66kW boasts an impressive fuel consumption of 5.4 litres/100km (combined cycle NEDC) while emitting only 124g CO² / km.

With its sophisticated styling combined with super smart technology, New Sandero Stepway comes with a host of fitmentsand features that clearly set it apart from its class peers.

Bluetooth® connectivity facilitates safe, convenient, hands-free telephony plus music streaming from external devices while on the go; this, together with the Double Din radio MP-3 compatible CD player (with USB port) is all accessed via fingertip controls located behind the steering wheel for optimum ease and convenience; electric windows front and back; electrically adjustable side mirrors, plus rear parking sensor/ assist.

ECO mode function is available on Renault’s 66kW Turbo petrol engine and by electronically modifying the engine’s response at the push of a button, it enables drivers to automatically optimise fuel consumption and correct energy-wasting driving parameters to achieve greater economy. It adjusts engine operation within acceptable limits and can reduce fuel consumption and CO2 emissions by as much as 12% depending on driving styles and road conditions.

Smart technology that crosses over into the safety arena is the cruise control + speed limiter. The system electronically maintains a steady speed as set by the driver for a more comfortable and safer drive on highways and open roads (and to help avoid being caught on speed cameras!) and is operated from a button located on the steering wheel.

Renault’s New Sandero Stepway boasts an unrivalled safety package as standard and rates as the safest car of its class.

The Anti-Lock Braking System (ABS) is coupled with Emergency Brake Assist (EBA), which kicks in and automatically applies maximum brake pressure when emergency braking conditions are detected. Maximum pressure is applied from the onset of braking and remains until the ABS trigger threshold is reached. EBA shortens braking distance by up to nine metres or up to 25%.

The Electronic Stability Programme (ESP) + traction control (ASR) ensures vehicle stability and assists the driver to avoid possible loss of control due to excessive speed or slippery road conditions, for example. It detects and reduces loss of traction, reduces engine power and brakes on independent wheels in the event of loss of control.

Hill Start Assist (HSA) is automatically activated (upon complete stop) as soon as an incline of at least 10% is detected. The system is engaged by stepping firmly on the brake and prevents any backward movement for long enough to pull off without needing to use the handbrake. When stepping off the brake, the car will hold for approximately three seconds to allow pull off with no roll-back.

New Sandero Stepway also offers passive safety features ‘beyond its class’ protecting the driver and all passengers, whether seated front or back. In addition to front seat belts with load limiters and ISOFIX fasteners for child and baby seats, it boasts front side airbags and 3-point safety belts for the three passengers seated in the rear.

In line with Renault’s uncompromising stance on safety, the body structure has reinforced programmed crumple zones and the shape, thickness and rigidity of the front bumper and bonnet area are designed for improved impact absorption.

The New Sandero Stepway derivative comes standard with Renault’s industry-leading five-year/150 000km warranty plus a two-year/30 000km service plan (service intervals: 15 000 km).

In line with Renault’s objective to be positioned in the Top 5 in terms of parts pricing, New Sandero Stepway owners are assured that they will find running costs favourably affordable.

What’s more, with Renault SA stocking more than 17 000 spare parts in its Rosslyn, Pretoria-based warehouse, parts availability presents no problem.

“We’re geared to deliver more than 95% of all parts ordered in less than 24 hours to any of our dealerships countrywide,” says Payzan. “Customers can rest assured that Complete Peace of Mind kicks in as soon as an all-new Sandero Stepway deal is done!”
