Already renowned for its exceptional versatility, tangible quality, plush appointments and all-terrain talents, the Koleos is a unique, upmarket offering in the Renault range.

“Since we introduced the Koleos to the ever-competitive, and constantly growing, SUV market, it has established itself as an upper-class compact SUV that convinces both on the road, and off the beaten track,” comments Xavier Gobille, managing director of Renault South Africa.

The Renault Koleos is a compact SUV offering a unique combination of versatile space, plush luxury, comprehensive safety, involving dynamics and all-terrain capability.

Its all-terrain underpinnings have already proven themselves on Southern Africa’s tough terrain, and combine robust suspension components with a raised ground clearance to allow impressive traversability over unforgiving terrain.

In the case of 4×4 versions, Renault’s intuitive permanent, all-wheel drive system provides vital extra traction when the going gets really tough, assisted by sophisticated technologies such as a specifically configured electronic stability control system, and Hill Descent Control.

Koleos customers can choose between petrol and turbodiesel powerplants, as well as between a manual  and an automatic gearbox, as well as a convenient continuously variable transmission (CVT).

The range consists of four models. The most affordable version is the Koleos 2.5 Dynamique Manual 4×2. Its urge is provided by a 2,5-litre four-cylinder engine. The TR25 unit delivers 126 kW of maximum power at 6 000 r/min, together with a healthy 226 Nm of torque at 4 400 r/min. A six-speed manual gearbox is standard.

In this guise, the Koleos reaches 100 km/h from rest in 9,0 seconds, and has a 193 km/h top speed. Fuel consumption in the combined cycle comes to 9,6 litres/100 km, while the CO2 emissions rating is 227 g/km.

The Koleos 2.5 Dynamique Manual 4×2 gets a full-house list of standard features that positions it firmly in the premium class. Standard safety equipment includes ABS brakes with Emergency Brake Assist, an electronically control parking brake with automatic park control, height-adjustable front seatbelts with pre-tensioners and load limiters, and rear seat belts with load limiters.

The Dynamique package also includes front, front side and front/rear curtain airbags, anti-whiplash head restraints, ISOFIX child seat mounts, and a system that automatically unlocks the doors, cuts off the fuel system and activates the hazard warning lights in the case of an accident.

A comprehensive list of driver aids includes a seven-function trip computer, variable-rate electric power steering, and a height and tilt-adjustable steering wheel. Halogen headlights and front fog lamps are standard, as is a comprehensive interior lighting package.

The driver’s seat has a lumbar support adjuster and is height-adjustable, while the front passenger seat folds forward to form a table. The rear bench seat is split 60:40 and forms a flat cargo floor when folded down.

Standard convenience items include electrically operated windows front and rear, cruise control, manual climate control, and a 140 watt CD sound system with satellite controls , six loudspeakers and Bluetooth connectivity. Also included are 12V power sockets front and rear, retractable rear sun blinds, and front sun visors with vanity mirrors for driver and front passenger.

One step up, and the first of the all-wheel drive versions, is the Koleos 2.5 Dynamique Premium CVT 4×4. As the nomenclature suggests, this model offers the same 2,5-litre powerplant, but coupled to the CVT gearbox, which offers a seamless and ultra-refined driving experience.

The CVT unit provides the ideal effective gear ratio for all driving conditions, while offering all the clutchless convenience of a conventional automatic gearbox. A sequential manual mode can also be selected.

This model achieves a 0-100 km/h sprint time of 9,3 seconds and posts a top speed of 194 km/h, while achieving a combined-cycle fuel consumption figure of 9,9 litres/100 km. The CO2 emissions rating is 227 g/km.

The third derivative in the Koleos range is the 2.0 dCi Dynamique Premium 4×4 Manual. It links the low-down shove and tractability of a turbodiesel engine to Renault’s slick six-speed manual gearbox and the same sophisticated all-wheel drive system as the CVT-equipped petrol version.

The 16-valve dCi turbodiesel unit has a maximum power output of 127 kW at 3 750 r/min, while the torque peak of 360 Nm is achieved at just 2 000 r/min.

That’s enough to propel the Koleos from 0-100 km/h in 9,9 seconds, and on to reach a top speed of 191 km/h. Combined-cycle fuel consumption of the Renault Koleos 2.0 dCi comes to 6,9 litres/100 km, while the CO2 emissions rating is 184 g/km.

Topping the range is the  2.0 dCi Dynamique Premium 4×4 Automatic. It also employs a 2,0-liter common-rail turbodiesel engine, but specifically tuned for compatibility with the six-speed automatic gearbox.

Thus, maximum output comes to 110 kW at 4 000 r/min, while the torque maximum of 320 Nm is reached at 2 000 r/min. The Koleos flagship is credited with a combined-cycle fuel consumption figure of 7,9 l/100 km, with commensurate CO2 emissions of 197 g/km.

All the 4×4 models in the Koleos line-up are equipped to  Dynamique Premium levels. They  are fitted with everything already include in the Dynamique package, but additionally benefit from ESP stability control, front and rear parking assistance sensors, and Hill Start Assistance and Hill Descent Control.

Also included are auto-sensing windscreen wipers and automatic headlight activation, while the Easy Estate system allows the mechanical release of the rear seats to maximise boot space, simply by pulling a lever behind the tailgate

Inside, leather upholstery replaces the Dynamique’s cloth interior, while the vanity mirrors are lit. Automatic climate control is standard. The Dynamique Premium model also gets satin-finish aluminium roof bars.

For the 2010 model year, additions to the Dynamique Premium equipment level include 4×4 ESP Trajectory Control, for enhanced stability and traction in all-terrain conditions. TomTom navigation is standard, as is the hands-free key card entry and vehicle starting system.

The top-end sound system features Arkamys surround sound capability for an immersive sound experience, while the automatic climate control has dual-zone individual temperature control. The leather front seats are heated, and the headlights have a washer/wipe system.

Importantly, all three 4×4 models offer authentic-off-road prowess, thanks to an intelligent all-wheel drive system that seamlessly splits torque between the front and rear axles whenever required. Electronically actuated, the system provides instant grip whenever required.

In default mode, the all-wheel drive system is set to ‘Auto’, which allows the electronic control unit to continuously monitor traction and driving conditions, and vary the torque/split accordingly.

On challenging surfaces, a 4WD Lock mode can be selected via a push-button on the centre console. This locks the front/rear torque split in the 50:50 setting. There is also a 2WD Lock mode, which prevents the system from feeding torque to the rear wheels.

Add the raised ride height and aggressive approach and departure angles, and the Koleos is a convincing performer off the beaten track.

In line with Renault’s intention to provide a true crossover vehicle without compromises, the Koleos delivers exceptional standards of safety. Thanks to an extensive range of active and passive safety features, the innovative crossover 4×4 already has a full five-star Euro NCAP safety rating to its credit.

Next year, Renault will release a stylish new version of the high-end Koleos SUV. The newcomer made its debut at this year’s Frankfurt Show, will be previewed at JIMS before being released in South Africa in the first quarter of next year.

The new Renault Koleos reasserts the dynamic personality of the original, thanks to elegant, more expressive front-end styling, while its carefully-finished interior delivers even more refined appointments and enhanced  travelling comfort.

Impeccable quality will again be a core virtue of the new Koleos range. Designed by Renault and manufactured at the Renault Samsung Motors plant in Busan, South Korea, it benefits from Renault’s vast experience in the realms of both passive and active safety.

The unique appeal of the Koleos in a burgeoning and ever competitive compact SUV market ultimately relies on its exceptional versatility.

It combines the comfort and refinement of a sedan, the space and configurability of an MPV, and the all-terrain prowess of an authentic SUV in a single, convincing package.

The Renault Koleos range is supported by a comprehensive after-sales customer support package, under the Renault Confiance banner, that includes a five-year/150 000 km warranty and a five-year/100 000 km service plan.
