A feast of feathers and fangs at the Rand Show 2012
Fancy meeting a few movie stars? Like a main character from the 2005 movie Racing Stripes…or a couple of actors who starred with Nicholas Cage in Lord of War? They’re going to be at the Rand Show 2012, and you might even get to pet them if you’re lucky.
Join passionate animal conservationist and animal handler, Bryan Vorster a.k.a. Snake Bite Jones, at theRandShow 2012’s Animal Kingdom, for a feast of feathers, fangs, and farm.
Meet Mr Penelican the Pelican, star of Racing Stripes and Free Willy 4, and the endangeredCapevultures who starred alongside the famous Mr Cage. Along with Penelican and his vulture friends,Bryanwill put on a show every day at the Rand Show, from 6-15 April 2012. Bring your picnic blanket and spend an hour withBryanand his black-shouldered kites, falcons, Harris hawks, toucans and owls, as they show off their aerial acrobatics and swooping fly-pasts.
There will also be slithery critters on parade. In two interactive shows daily – yes, you’ll get to touch snakes! – Snake Bite Jones will introduce you to his menagerie of reptiles: puff adders,Capecobras, monitor lizards and pythons.
In between the shows, visit the displays of birds and reptiles, includingBryan’s crocs who’re travelling all the way fromCape Town. Come and chat to a back-chatting Kookaburra, and see the King vulture andCapeeagle owl. And if your timing is right, you’ll get to meet some of the stars of the bird show, who’ll come out from time to time to get up close and personal with the kids.

The snake park is the place to go if you want to peer in at the world’s fastest snake, the black mamba, or take a careful peep at the world’s most venomous adder, the Gaboon viper.
And lend your support for conservation causes at the Animal Kingdom’s Conservation Corner.
If you’d prefer something a little tamer, make a stop at the kiddies’ farmyard, where pot-belly pigs, chickens, goats, rabbits and the sweetest baby dwarf donkey will delight the kids. The under-11s can ride miniature horses, and in another first for the Rand Show, you’ll be able to learn how to milk a cow in the Milking Barn.
Be sure to also catch the rest of the Rand Show’s bumper 2012 lineup: from masses of lifestyle related exhibits and great shopping opportunities, to the SANDF displays, free circus performances, the daring feats of Canadian high-divers, the ever-popular SA Chefs Theatre, fun fair, and Kids Theatre.
