Porsche Racing Goodwood

Porsche Carrera Cup GB Scholar Daniel Lloyd (Huddersfield) was one of the stars of the 2012 Goodwood Festival of Speed (June 28 – July 1) when he set the sixth fastest time of the event in his Porsche 911 GT3 Cup. Competing against Formula 1 cars and GT1 sports cars, Lloyd drove superbly in tricky conditions on his first experience of the hillclimb at the Festival of Speed.

Lloyd’s performance fitted perfectly with the theme of the 2012 event, Young Guns – Born to Win, “I was really pleased with my time in the last run and we got some amazing coverage on live TV,” said the 20-year old racer. His appearance at Goodwood was part of his prize for winning the 2012 Carrera Cup GB Scholarship, and will be closely followed by his Porsche Mobil1 Supercup debut at the British Grand Prix at Silverstone this weekend (July 6 – 8).

A driver development philosophy lies at the core of Porsche Motorsport, and the Carrera Cup GB Scholarship is a prime example. This UK initiative awards a bursary to a nominated young driver to assist them in stepping up to the Porsche Carrera Cup GB Championship. Lloyd is already proving to be a worthy recipient of the 2012 Scholarship and recently became the first driver to win a Carrera Cup GB race in his Scholarship season. At the mid-point of the year, he lies fifth in the points table among the pack of 450 hp 911 GT3 Cup race cars.

Celebrating ten years of Carrera Cup GB

The 911 GT3 Cup car is the latest edition of the best-selling racing car of all time, having been built in a production series of more than 2,000 since 1998. The ‘Type 997’ 911 GT3 Cup racer is based on the iconic 911 GT3 RS road car, and is powered by a rear-mounted, 450 hp 3.8-litre flat-six engine.

First run in 2003, the Porsche Carrera Cup GB is the fastest single marque racing Championship in Britain. With over 20 examples of the 450 hp 911 GT3 Cup race car battling for honours, it provides thrilling support to the British Touring Car Championship at circuits up and down the country.

The Carrera Cup GB has established itself as the perfect platform for drivers looking to further develop their careers in GT sports car racing. With the identical 911 GT3 Cup race cars putting the emphasis squarely on driving talent, close racing is guaranteed.

The Porsche 911 GT3 Cup race car driven by Daniel Lloyd joined the 1962 Porsche 804 F1 car, the 917K from 1970 and the 1987 Le Mans-winning 962 Group C racer on the roll call of Porsche racing machinery in action at Goodwood.

These iconic models shared the spotlight with contemporary Porsche stars. 2012 marked the Festival debut of the latest Porsche 911 Carrera S Coupe and Carrera Cabriolet in the Supercar Run. In the First Glance category, the 430 hp Panamera GTS made its first appearance at Goodwood.
