The head count at Peugeot South Africa head office in Linbro Park recently shot up – but it won’t last long.

Peugeot Car Sales Executive

Ten individuals are currently undergoing training at head office as part of the brand’s New Sales Executive Recruitment Project.  This is before a rapid move on to dealerships for the next phase of their preparation for a career in the motor industry retail sector.

The  ambitious initiative is to find suitable young people – not necessarily with automotive industry experience – and turn them into super salesmen (or women), who will assist in building the Peugeot brand image by finding long-term employment in the dealer network, and raise the bar to a new level of professionalism.

Explains Francis Harnie, Managing Director of Peugeot South Africa: “The industry traditionally has a sales staff turnover of between 40 and 45 percent per annum, which has an enormous cost implication for the dealership and the importer, and ultimately a service implication for the customer.

“For this reason we want to create a new sales culture, one which will improve dealership staff quality as well as productivity – with the customer the winner in the end. We’re looking for outgoing and self-motivated young people who ideally have some sales or customer service experience to be at the frontline of this cultural shift.”

To this end, Peugeot South Africa (in conjunction with Strategic Personnel), will recruit and train, covering aspects such as brand heritage, product knowledge as well as learning generic sales skills.  Lastly, getting the individual started with select dealers, for further on-the-job training and mentoring under the watchful eye of experienced sales managers.

The ultimate objective is for the individual to find a permanent and happy home at the dealership where they undergo their practical training.

The frequency of this training project is based purely on the needs of the dealer network.

Rolled out successfully in the Gauteng region it is in the throes of extending to outer-lying regions.  With the current focus on Sales Executives, the initiative will also extend to the after sales department with the placement of Service Advisors by mid-2013.
