    Almost all Businesses in Japan Close for New Year, and people spend their times with friends and family to celebrate New Year in Japan.

    In most western world’s people will start working on the 2nd of January.

    In Japan people will typically take time off and only start working on the 3rd of January.

    Japan New Year Greeting Cards

    It is tradition for Japanese people to send New Year Greeting Cards to each other on New Year’s day. This tradition still lives on strong today, and it is expected that millions of New Year’s cards will be exchanged this year.

    Japan New Year a Cultural Experience

    The Japanese celebrates New Year with the “Hatsumode festivities” – On the first day of the New Year thousands of Japanese will celebrate “Harsumode” by going to the temples and Shrine’s. At midnight on New Year’s Eve bells are rung, to ring in the New Year.

    Japan New Year Tradition – The Emperor’s Greeting

    On the 2nd day of the New Year in Japan, thousands of people will make their way  to the Imperial Palace in Tokyo. During this time the emperor will speak to the people and wish the Happy Holidays!

    Are All Businesses Closed in Japan over the New Year Period

    In modern Japan you will find some Businesses open on the 1st and 2nd of January 2012. Traditionally all businesses closed on New Year’s day and on the 2nd of January. To find open shops you will need to go into the more modern parts of Japan.
