November 18th, 2010 – The recently launched Kia Sportage was named Utility of the Year 2011, one of the categories of the prize “Car of the Year, sponsored by Autoesporte magazine, published by Editora Globo. The new generation of the most famous SUV from Kia won candidates Hyundai ix35 and BMW X1. The announcement of the winners of the 44th edition of the award took place on Wednesday, 17, in São Paulo.
The choice of winners was done in two phases by vote – after the pre-selection, in which each juror selected five semi-finalists, it had a second election to choose a winner from each category. The jury was composed of journalists from major media in the country and four professionals from Autoesporte magazine and website.
“Having been elected the Utility of the Year 2011 in the ‘Car of the Year’ Award means having the recognition of the leading journalists from Brazil and increases our responsibility, once we competed with brands already consecrated in the market. We appreciate this honor and Kia Motors of Brazil will do anything to meet the expectations of Brazilian consumers”, says José Luiz Gandini, president of Kia Motors do Brasil.
New Kia Sportage is available on the domestic market with 2.0-liter engine, DOHC, 16 valves with dual CVVT of 166 horsepower at 6,200 rpm and maximum torque of 20.1 kgm at 4,600 rpm, manual transmission 5-speed or automatic 6-speed.
Last August, new Kia Sportage was awarded “Top Safety Pick” by Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS), in the United States, in the small SUV category, with manufacturing date after March 2010. The model received the highest honor in frontal, side, rear and rollover crash test.
