PRETORIA, 13 September, 2011 – Ford will showcase its vision for the ST performance family with the unveiling of the all-new Focus ST. The new model, which demonstrates the brand’s global performance strategy, will be revealed to the South African public at October’s
Ford is promising a new era for driving enthusiasts around the world with the expansion of the ST – Sport Technologies – range. The ST DNA will be shared across all future products bearing that badge. They will share key physical similarities in areas such as colours and exterior styling, as well as interior styling and driver-orientated interior features.
This DNA profile means a noticeable power increase over the existing model’s engine line-up and an emphasis on great fun-to-drive qualities customers will crave.
The new Focus ST combines strong performance, exceptional handling, eye-catching style and everyday refinement. Powered by a 2.0-litre Ford EcoBoost engine mated to a specially revised six-speed manual transmission, the car offers an uncompromising mix of performance and efficiency. The lightweight, all-aluminium engine delivers a maximum output of 184kW and peak torque of 360Nm, yet helps cut CO2 emissions and fuel consumption by more than 20 per cent compared to the previous-generation European Focus ST.
While the Focus ST makes its international debut at the Frankfurt International Motor Show it is also destined for local shores and will be displayed at this year’s JIMS ahead of its 2012 introduction.
Ford’s global product strategy has also been central to transforming the company’s performance strategy – making models that were once exclusive to a single region more accessible around the world. The performance strategy is based on extending the enthusiast appeal of Ford’s global vehicle range.
With robust safety considerations already taken into account in the development of the Focus base models for all regions of the world, Ford’s Global Performance Vehicles group had very few tweaks to make to get the new Focus ST up to standard.
This allowed them to concentrate on areas like calibrating engines for different fuel grades found internationally, or ensuring that sound levels are within regional legislation. It also ensures that the global approach to the rigorous durability and performance testing that Ford’s performance vehicles go through can be carried out meticulously.
The result is finely-honed performance cars like the new Focus ST that can be used to their full potential in all conditions around the world.
