Today Google have selected Maria Sibylla Merian to be featured on their homepage. Maria Sibylla Merian was possibly one of the first artists to create detailed illustrations about various insect species detailing their development from worm to insect.
In her book Metamorphosis insectorum Surinamensium (Metamorphosis of the Insects of Surinam), Maria Sibylla Merian wrote that she had been drawn to studying insects as a small child in her native Frankfurt, Germany, especially the industrious silkworm.
At the time people believed that insects were from the Devil and that they were simply born from mud, Maria Sibylla Merian illustrations proved them wrong, as she detailed the whole metamorphosis of more than 180 different insect species.
I remember in biology we had to draw illustrations of insects, and sketching their exoskeletons and insides and are now wondering if our school books had illustrations of the original work of Maria Sibylla Merian.
If you haven’t seen the Maria Sibylla Merian you have until midnight to visit one of Google Search engine homepages to see it today, or otherwise you will need to visit the Google Doodles Library pages.
