Today Google have changes there Google Logo to the “London 2012 Pole Vault” Doodle. This year South African’s hoping to see a South African Athlete performing at the London 2012 Pole Vault will be disappointed to find out that South Africa do not have a Pole Vault athlete at the London 2012 Olympics.

However South Africa do have a great Legacy of Pole Vault champs, when South African’s think of Olympics and Pole Vault most will likely remember Okkert Brits one of the South African Olympic Contenders.

Okkert Brits participated in the 1996, 2000 and 2004 Olympic Games for South Africa. Although Okkert Brits never won a Gold medal Olympics he were one of the best contenders for South African Gold medals at the Olympics. In the 2000 Olympics Okkert Brits finished in 7th place for South Africa.

On the London 2012 Pole Vault website Okkert Brits is listed for his South African, and African Pole Vault record jumping 6.3 meters. This record is higher than the current Olympic’s world record of 5.96 meters by Australian Hooker Stevens.

Even if South Africa doesn't have any athletes this year at the London 2012 Pole Vault competition the Google Doodle today brought back some fond memories of Okkert Brits at previous Olympics.
