The Guild of Motoring Writers has extended an invitation to members and potential new members alike to visit the Bloodhound SSC Land Speed Record team at Bristol’s Historic Dockyard on Wednesday 18 July.

The day will start with refreshments at 10am before a presentation about the project – hopefully by either former record holder and project director Richard Noble or the current world’s fastest man, Squadron Leader Andy Green. This will be followed by the opportunity to see the latest phase of the jet engine-powered car which the British team hopes will exceed 1,000mph when it takes to a dry lake bed in South Africa in 2013. Power comes from the Eurojet EJ200 jet engine found in the Typhoon fighter plane.

As well as an attempt on the Land Speed Record, currently held by Green driving Thrust SSC, the project is aiming to help stimulate an interest in science technology, engineering and mathematics among young people in Britain.

GoMW Chairman Richard Aucock says: “I want to get out and meet as many of our members as possible and such ‘Chairman’s events’ are one of the best ways. As well as being an enjoyable social occasion, I want these to be productive opportunities so that everyone can feel that they can take part. Each event will be planned to maximise the potential for news and features, as well as the chance to mingle with both current and potential Guild members.”

To cover the cost of refreshments throughout the morning participants are being asked to contribute £5. To book a place on the Bloodhound tour, please send a cheque for £5 with a covering note of your details to: GoMW General Secretary Patricia Lodge, 40 Baring Road, Bournemouth, Dorset BH6 4DT.
