SHARKS BOSS PLAYING THE GAME ON A JET SKI
- Rugby legend does it on the water!
- John Smit takes up jet ski fishing
- SeaDoo his only choice of watercraft
Springbok rugby legend John Smit seems to always stick his head into things – in the front row of the Springbok scrum, as the new boss of The Sharks, and lately into the waves on a new SeaDoo. Riding a powerful SeaDoo GTI 155 Limited, the former Springbok hooker has taken up the massively popular and growing sport of jet ski fishing.
“This form of fishing has become very popular, and as John enjoys fishing, we decided to support him on a SeaDoo for the sport which he is now involved in,” says General Manager at CMH Marine and Leisure, Fred Fensham.
“Like SeaDoo, John has a massive following, and we wanted to show our support for him as one of our favourite sons,” says Fensham, whose company stocks the complete range of SeaDoo personal watercraft.
John enjoys throwing the ski around when he goes fishing or simply takes it out on a joy ride in the waves off Aliwal Shoal, at the Durban Ski Boat Club or beaches like Umhloti.
“After my first ride on the new SeaDoo, I realised I was on a very different machine to what I had been used to over the last couple of years. The power, fuel efficiency and technology involved when riding this ski far out-weighed anything I have ever been on before,” says Smit.
The art of jet ski fishing is a new concept for the man who nowadays wears the Green and Gold as CEO of The Sharks.
“For a guy that has only just started to learn how to fish off a ski, it’s important to have every advantage possible,” he says, adding that he practices catch-and-release, but keeps one for the pan every now and then.
The new toy – supplied by CMH Marine and Leisure and maintained by PineTown based dealer Hooked Up – is the centre of attention wherever John goes.
“I also have to hide my ski in the garage from my kids – they pester me every day to take them out onto the water!”
The SeaDoo GTI Limited 155 comes with everything you need for a fun, stress-free day on the water, including a touring seat for longer runs, a high-performance variable trim system and cruise control, and is the only watercraft with IBR (intelligent braking – a unique safety feature to SeaDoo).
“It can be described as the superbike of the waves…” says John.
