SAMSA on Board for the 2013 Johannesburg Boat Show
The South African Maritime Safety Association signs on as a sponsor of South Africa’s premier inland boating show to be held at the Nasrec Expo Centre from August 8-11.
The South African Maritime Safety Association is determined that its presence at the 2013 Johannesburg Boat Show, held at the Nasrec Expo Centre between August 8 and 11, will have a real impact on show-goers, especially visitors who are new to the maritime experience.
“We are not looking to set up little booths and handing out pamphlets,” says Tebogo Ramatjie, Marketing and Communications Officer of SAMSA.
“What we will be doing is reaching out to show-visitors and educating them on the boating experience, and what is needed to make boating a safe, enjoyable pastime.”
SAMSA will be setting up a series of short seminars, lasting about 30 minutes, on what first-time boat owners need to know when setting out to buy a boat.
“From a safety point of view, our organisation is responsible for the craft moving in our waters, and that includes very much our in-land waterways. We are tasked with making people aware of the boating regulations we have in South Africa, that they are aware of the compliances that are legislated.
“Our organisation is responsible for the issuing of skippers licences in South Africa. Many people aren’t aware that anyone operating a boat on South African waters is required to be in possession of a skipper’s licence. We would love to get to the situation where all boats on our waters are operated by people with the proper qualifications.”
The SAMSA presentations will also encompass other subjects pertinent to boat owners, including minimising pollution, and safety standard that apply to both boats and pilots.
