With the introduction of the 1984 Jeep Cherokee, three decades ago, Jeep invented the mid-size SUV category. The all-new compact SUV of the Jeep brand was the first vehicle of its type and size and was so successful that it was quickly followed by a number of competitive vehicles. A major feature of the 1984 Jeep Cherokee was the all-new unibody frame that gave the vehicle superior rigidity with reduced weight and fuel consumption.

Today, the new generation Jeep Cherokee completely rethinks the category invented by Jeep 30 years ago and features a new sleek and athletic design, the first nine-speed automatic transmission in the mid-size SUV segment, enhanced on-road driving dynamics and handling, superior Jeep 4x4 capability, premium interior craftsmanship, innovative technology, new levels of efficiency, entertainment and comfort and ‘five-star’ safety and security features that recently allowed the vehicle to earn the designation of ‘safest 2013 SUV’ in its category from Euro NCAP.

This vehicle is also the first mid-size SUV to feature rear axle disconnect, resulting in reduced friction and energy loss when 4x4 capability isn’t required and ensuring improved fuel efficiency. The rear-axle disconnect, seamlessly switches between two-and four-wheel drive for full-time torque management without requiring input from the driver.

The new Jeep Cherokee lineup will be introduced in Jeep dealerships starting in June, in the Longitude, Limited and Trailhawk trim levels. The engine range comprises the new 3.2l l V-6 Pentastar petrol engine or the 2.4l Tigershark MultiAir L4, both of which are offered in combination with the all-new nine-speed automatic transmission.

Jeep designers were inspired to create a vehicle that remains true to the brand while moving it into the next era with a shape that is as efficient as the vehicle and retains the DNA that makes it a Jeep. Fluid, sleek exterior lines highlight the efficient, wind-splitting upper body of the Cherokee. The rugged, protective lower body conveys the legendary capability that is characteristic of every Jeep.

The new Jeep Cherokee has a powerful stance, an aggressive wheel-to-body proportion and a commanding road presence. The approach and departure angles contribute to the best-in-class capability.

The new generation Jeep Cherokee was designed with integrated aerodynamic features to reduce drag and assist in improving fuel economy. Aerodynamically designed features include a fully integrated, aerodynamic tuned body, an extensive rear spoiler, integrated underbelly pans, integrated sill aero spats, tail light design meant to kick air off the side of the body and lightweight aluminium wheels that were scrutinized for aero efficiency.

A key element in the front of the new Jeep Cherokee is the 'waterfall' bonnet with the iconic peaked, seven-slotted grille which includes a crisp, horizontal snap – a feature found in many classic Jeep vehicles. The bonnet is clearly defined and separated from the front fenders in a modern interpretation of the brand’s design heritage. Advanced LED lighting technology is used throughout the new Jeep Cherokee. Daytime running lights (DRL) and standard Bi-Xenon headlights, enhance the unique proportions of the front.

The sides feature the signature Jeep trapezoidal wheel arches. The rear is highlighted by the contemporary full LED tail lamps, which are an integral part of the rear backlight graphic, making the vehicle look stronger yet harmonious. This shape is the connection between the upper and lower rear as an interlocking graphic statement that brings a unique presence specific to this new Cherokee. The rear fascia also carries Jeep Cherokee-specific rear fog lamps.

The new Cherokee rides on 17-inch (Longitude and Trailhawk) or 18-inch tyres (Limited) providing drivers with confident traction in all road conditions.

To those customers looking for the pleasure of enjoying the open-air driving experience that only Jeep can ensure, the new Cherokee offers the new CommandView dual-pane power sunroof, available as an option on all trim levels. CommandView extends from the windshield to the rear of the vehicle allowing for perfect views both on- and off-road.

All-new, premium interior

The Jeep brand’s recent Grand Cherokee introduction set the foundation for a new direction in interiors that the new Cherokee builds upon. The interior is modern, welcoming and comfortable. It features a sophisticated, refined design, hand-sculpted forms, signature Jeep styling cues, high-quality materials, precision craftsmanship and attention to detail. The cabin is designed to offer the driver ultimate comfort with useful, easy-to-operate technology and clever storage.

Also in the development of the Cherokee’s all-new interior, Jeep designers took inspiration from the brand’s heritage. The signature trapezoidal plan view feature line is classic Jeep, reminiscent of the trapezoidal wheel arches on the exterior. The centre stack bezel is inspired by the outline of the front grille of the 1940s Willys Jeep and continues the design language of its larger sibling, the Grand Cherokee.

Premium materials abound on all customer touch-points – the door uppers, the centre armrest and the upper instrument panel. Throughout the cabin, customers will find interior trim that is soft to the touch and pleasing to the eye. A vinyl-wrapped, stitched instrument panel brow is standard on all models and the stitching carries over to the centre console armrest and front door armrests.

The new Jeep Cherokee is available with three interior trim choices, all inspired by exotic locations and landscapes around the world, such as Morocco, Grand Canyon and the Italian Mount Vesuvio.

The country of Morocco at night was the inspiration for the black interiors. When the sun sets in Morocco, the light reflects the shapes and brings them to the light. There is high contrast with golden tones. Morocco interior is black with warm Moroccan Sun accent stitching, providing a contrast to the black. Morocco is available in cloth, Nappa leather or a combination of the two, and is a choice on all trim levels of the Cherokee.

The Jeep brown interior was inspired by the Grand Canyon: based on the hues in the rocks of the Grand Canyon, the warm, rich brown features golden-tone accent stitching. Grand Canyon is a Nappa leather interior and is available on Cherokee Trailhawk models.

An image of Mount Vesuvius in Italy inspired the Jeep-exclusive dark brown and Indigo Blue leather interior, called Vesuvio. The dark brown and dark blue colours are highlighted with white accent stitching and silver trim. Vesuvio is available as a Nappa leather interior on Cherokee Limited.

Cloth is standard on the Longitude with leather offered optionally. Leather is standard on the Limited versions and the Trailhawk features cloth and leather combination with full leather as an option.

Seats are ergonomically designed to support the contour of the body, and are available with a ‘memory’ adjustable mechanism and heated/ventilated features for the front seats. They are trimmed with premium cloth (Longitude), quality Nappa leather (Limited and Trailhawk) or a combination of cloth and Nappa leather (Trailhawk). The 60/40 split second-row seats adjust fore and aft for increased passenger comfort and cargo flexibility.

Functionality is a main characteristic of the new Jeep Cherokee interior, where plenty of thoughtful, clever storage features can be found. A refined, covered, top bin is located above the centre stack on top of the instrument panel for secured storage of small items. The front-passenger seat folds flat and offers hidden, in-seat storage by flipping up the passenger seat cushion.

4x4 systems and ‘Go anywhere’ Jeep capability

The new Jeep Cherokee takes the legendary Jeep 4x4 capability to the next level and offers the advantages of an all-weather, all-terrain vehicle. The new generation of the Jeep mid-size SUV provides a choice of two innovative 4x4 systems for best-in-class 4x4 capability in all driving conditions: the single-speed, fully automatic Jeep® Active Drive I and the Jeep® Active Drive Lock including all features of the Jeep Active Drive II and adding a locking rear differential and Selec-Speed Control (on Trailhawk models only).

Jeep Offroad

The new Jeep Cherokee is also the first mid-size SUV to feature rear-axle disconnect, resulting in reduced energy loss when 4x4 capability isn’t needed and improving fuel efficiency. The rear-axle-disconnect seamlessly switches between two- and four-wheel drive for full-time torque management without requiring input from the driver.

Available on the Cherokee Limited 4x4 model, Jeep Active Drive I features a single power transfer unit (PTU) which is fully automatic and delivers seamless operation in and out of four-wheel drive at any speed. The system does not require any driver intervention or feedback and delivers yaw correction during dynamic events and improves both understeer and oversteer conditions. Jeep Active Drive I offers balanced torque distribution with brake traction control. The four-wheel-drive performance results from a fully variable wet clutch housed in the rear drive module. The clutch supplies the proper amount of torque for any driving condition, including slippery conditions, aggressive starts and dynamic driving. Sophisticated algorithms enable the system to contribute to the driving dynamics while interacting with the electronic stability control (ESC) system when approaching the traction limits of the road surface.

Jeep Active Drive Lock

Standard on all Trailhawk models only, Jeep Active Drive Lock features a two-speed power transfer unit (PTU) and a locking rear differential for superior low-speed power for rock crawling or severe off-road conditions. In the 4-Low mode, the system locks the front and rear drive shafts to ensure more power at low speeds and greater towing capability. Low range provides a 2.92:1 gear reduction that offers outstanding crawl ratios for extreme off-road driving.

Jeep Active Drive Lock works in conjunction with the Selec-Terrain system to aggressively modify the torque distribution while monitoring the engine transmission and ESC system, and providing power to the wheels that will deliver the most traction.

The locking rear differential is selectable in any low-range terrain mode, but will lock automatically when in certain Selec-Terrain modes such as “Rock,” to maximize tractive effort, which the tyre patch can support.

Jeep Active Drive Lock includes the exclusive Selec-Speed Control system featuring both Hill-ascent and Hill-descent Control.

All-new Cherokee’s 4x4 systems feature the Jeep brand’s renowned Selec-Terrain traction control system with four modes (five for the Trailhawk model, which adds Rock mode to Auto, Snow, Sport and Sand/Mud). Selec-Terrain allows the driver to choose and select, through the Selec-Terrain dial, the on- and off-road settingbest suited for optimum performance on any particular surface and is designed to optimize the four-wheel drive systems for unsurpassed control and capability. Selec-Terrain electronically coordinates and optimizes up to 12 systems, including: drivetrain control module, electronic brake controller, ESC, transmission controller, powertrain controller and - on Trailhawk models only - Selec-Speed Control (with Hill-ascent and Hill-descent Control).

In addition, the ESC system will change mode in coordination with the Selec-Terrain mode chosen:

  • ESC remains full on with Auto and Snow modes
  • ESC is off when in 4-Low
    • ESC is in Partial mode for Sport, and Sand/Mud modes. Partial mode means aid from traction control and stability control are reduced, but anti-lock braking system (ABS) and electronic roll mitigation remain fully enabled.

In 4-Low, the Selec-Terrain system shifts front and rear axles to a 2.92:1 gear set for increased torque and control off-road. When in neutral, Jeep Cherokee models equipped with Jeep Active Drive Lock disconnect the driveline for flat towing behind another vehicle.

Selec-Speed Control

The new Jeep Cherokee also offers an exclusive capability feature called Selec-Speed Control. Selec-Speed Control features both Hill-descent Control and Hill-ascent Control, allowing the Cherokee to climb and descend steep grades with minimal driver input. The ESC system controls engine torque and brake pressure to maintain target speed while driving off-road on uphill, level and downhill surfaces and over obstacles. The feature enables the driver to focus on steering while navigating technical off-road terrain. Available in 4-Low and exclusive to Trailhawk models, Selec-Speed Control is activated by a dedicated button on the Selec-Terrain switch.

Nine-speed transmission

The new Jeep Cherokee is one of the first mid-size SUVs to feature a standard nine-speed automatic transmission ensuring exceptionally smooth shifts, an extremely wide gear ratio range for optimized acceleration, reduced emissions and improved fuel efficiency. The new transmission’s gear ratios afford the right response at the right time, from aggressive launches to smooth power delivery at highway speeds, a product of smaller ratio steps between the gears. The ratios are: 1st – 4.70, 2nd – 2.84, 3rd – 1.91, 4th – 1.38, 5th – 1.00, 6th – 0.81, 7th – 0.70, 8th – 0.58, 9th – 0.48.

The Jeep Cherokee’s all-new nine-speed transmission provides a more responsive driving experience with quicker acceleration and smoother shifting. The wide ratio spread delivers an aggressive first gear ratio of 4.70 for low-end performance and small gear ratio steps which provide smooth transitions for gear-to-gear while offering a unique set of four overdrive ratios to benefit highway fuel economy and reduce overall noise, vibration and harshness (NVH) levels.

Flexible enough to accommodate the Jeep Cherokee engine’s full range of torque, the all-new transmission delivers not only the durability customers expect but premium ride quality levels too, complements of the precise shift schedules.

This new transmission features on-the-fly shift map changing, with manual shifting capability via Electronic Range Select. More than 40 individual shift maps for specific conditions optimize shift quality and shift points, maximizing fuel economy, performance and drivability. To determine the appropriate shift mode, the sophisticated software takes into account variables, including engine torque gradients, kick-down events, longitudinal and lateral acceleration and grade changes. For improved driving comfort and refinement, additional parameters integrated into the transmission control strategy include: temperature, speed and electronic stability control. The result is automatic shifting, ideally attuned to the performance requirements of almost any driving demand.

Jeep-Cherokee-Powertrain

The automatic transmission increases vehicle fuel economy through the ratio spread and mechanical efficiency of operating at lower engine revolutions per minute (rpm) in both city and highway environments. The addition of more gear ratios also helps reduce the perceived speed changes normally associated with upshifting and downshifting.

Gear changes are nearly imperceptible due to the evenly spaced gear steps between each gear ratio.  Internally, the transmission has four gear sets and six shift elements – multi-disc clutches, dog clutches and brakes. Only three shift elements are open at any time. With fewer open shift elements, drag losses due to multiple parts rotating relative to one another are reduced, improving fuel efficiency.

Engine range

The new Jeep Cherokee is powered by two petrol engine options: the 3.2l V-6 Pentastar and the 2.4l Tigershark MultiAir L4. Both petrol engines are paired to the new nine-speed automatic gearbox.

The 3.2l Pentastar

The new 3.2l Pentastar V6 is the first derivative of the renowned 3.6l Pentastar V6, and benefits from the same innovations that earned its larger displacement predecessor industry-wide praise for its efficiency, power and refinement. This contributes to a pleasurable driving experience with reduced noise, vibrations and harshness (NVH) and an outstanding balance of higher specific power output (62.5 kW per litre) while delivering fuel economy improvements of 30-% versus the outgoing V6 engine. The 3.2l V6 Pentastar engine produces 200 kW at 6,500 r/min, 315 Nm of torque at 4,300 r/min and boasts towing capacity of 2,200 kg. The 3.2l V6 Pentastar engine is available on the Limited and Trailhawk models of the Jeep Cherokee range.

Fuel economy ratings of the 3.2l V6 Pentastar petrol engine correspond to 10.0 l/100 km on the combined cycle, while CO2is 232 g/km.

Individual exhaust-manifold runners are integrated into the aluminum cylinder-head casting, a key Pentastar-family differentiator. This feature not only reduces weight and produces packaging benefits but it also increases manufacturing efficiency.

The 24-valve engine’s 10.7:1 compression ratio aids in lowering fuel consumption and improves performance while the variable-displacement oil pump further reduces parasitic losses to maximize fuel economy. The pump is programmed to operate as needed, staying in low pressure mode at engine speeds below 3,500 r/min, and then bumping up pressure as demand follows engine speed.

The new 3.2l Pentastar V6 carries over all the design features that make smooth power delivery one of the most captivating traits of the 3.6l engine.

A 60-degree, deep-skirt, die-cast-aluminum cylinder block with six-bolt main caps afford optimal stiffness for mitigation of NVH. Also contributing to NVH reduction are:

  • a structural windage tray to complement block stiffness
  • a structural aluminum oil pan
  • direct-mounted alternator and A/C compressor that increases stiffness
  • select-fit pistons with polymer-graphite-coated piston skirts
  • “silent chain” timing drive with inverted teeth for minimal sprocket contact
  • contoured composite cylinder-head covers
  • glass-reinforced nylon composite intake manifold

Further enhancing the driving experience is the specially designed intake manifold, which also features low-rumble tuning.

The 2.4l Tigershark

Efficiency and refinement are hallmarks of the 16-valve, 2.4l Tigershark MultiAir L4, fitted on the new Jeep Cherokee. The 2.4l engine features MultiAir technology and boasts the second-generation 'MultiAir2' system that further enhances combustion control, improves efficiency and reduces exhaust emissions. The 2.4l Tigershark MultiAir L4 produces 130 kW at 6,400 r/minand 229 Nm of torque at 3 900 r/min.

Fuel economy for the 2.4l Tigershark engine with 9-speed automatic transmission is 8.3 l/100 km in the combined cycle.

The acclaimed electro-hydraulic fully variable valve-lift system uses a column of oil in place of the traditional mechanical link between the camshaft and intake valves. As a result, it delivers precise control of the intake-valve events – beginning and end – delivering reductions in engine-pumping losses and increases in volumetric efficiency.

Refinement was a key consideration in the design of every Tigershark feature, from its fully isolated aluminum head cover with integrated oil-separation system, to its high-pressure, die-cast aluminum block.

Sandwiched between the block and the steel oil pan is a lightweight, lost-foam aluminum ladder frame with integral oil filter and oil cooler adapter. This lends additional structural rigidity. The oil pan itself benefits from refinement. Acoustic material is sandwiched between its outer and inner stampings.

Friction mitigation also contributes to reduced NVH, with the added benefit of enhancing durability. The Tigershark’s polymer-coated piston skirts accommodate tighter piston-to-bore tolerances. Cast-aluminum pistons with a compression ratio of 10:1 are designed specifically for the engine and MultiAir system. Each bore is fitted with individual piston oil-squirters in the block that spray oil on the bottom of the pistons and bore walls to maintain cylinder-wall and piston temperatures. This feature also helps prevent hot spots that could lead to knock and improve performance and fuel economy.

Fitted to the forged-steel crankshaft are new powder-forged-steel connecting rods that feature a full-floating piston pin with diamond-like carbon coating. This further reduces friction and improves fuel efficiency.

Vibration is minimized with the use of a balance shaft module. And to maintain adequate oiling at all engine speeds, the 2.4l Tigershark features a two-stage oil-pressure relief system that reduces engine-oil pumping loads at low engine speeds for better fuel efficiency.

Other key features of the 2.4l I-4 include:

World-class architecture

The Compact U.S. Wide (CUS-wide) platform is the basis for the underpinnings of the new Jeep Cherokee. This platform’s proven modular architecture means many models can be built using the same basic underpinnings. The result is better quality and reliability as well as lower costs, less development time and tooling. The architecture Cherokee is built on is comprised of common, modular and interchangeable components and allows for modularity of the wheelbase, front track, rear track, front overhang, length and width across vehicle lines.

The new Jeep Cherokee’s body structure has a high-strength steel content of roughly 65 %. Hot stamped-, high-strength- and ultra-high-strength steel are used to construct strong, lightweight, solid vehicle architecture.

New on-road performance

The new Jeep Cherokee’s premium on-road manners are a result of a number of efforts by Jeep engineers. The front independent suspension with MacPherson struts provides 170 mm of travel while the rear independent multi-link suspension provides up to 198 mm of travel for better articulation. The isolated rear cradle, aluminum front cross member and superior torsional rigidity deliver customers a quieter and smoother ride with improved handling characteristics.

The electronic power steering system (EPS) improves fuel efficiency and contributes to the Cherokee’s nimbleness with a turn circle radius of approximately 11 m in 4x2 models, 11.6 m in 4x4 models and 12 m for the Trailhawk trim level, the most capable off-road model in the new Cherokee lineup.

With EPS all of the power assist is provided via an electric motor system rather than a traditional hydraulic system. Because the system is fully electronic, the driver experiences optimal steering effort at all vehicle speeds, and there is less noise and better fuel efficiency since there is no parasitic loss from a power steering pump.

The boost, or assist, is variable and speed sensitive, responding to sensors monitoring steering torque, steering wheel speed and angle and vehicle speed. The steering system is fully integrated with the vehicle’s ESC system and helps to compensate in split-traction, torque steer and road camber situations.

‘Five-star’ and ‘best in class’ achiever in its category

Safety and security were at the forefront in the development of the new Jeep Cherokee. This allowed the new generation of the Jeep mid-size SUV to earn the prestigious Euro NCAP five-star rating last year with an overall score of 83/100. This major accolade confirms the Jeep brand’s special attention in matters relating to the protection of passengers and road users and underlines that the new generation Cherokee immediately satisfies all international safety standards.

Recently, the new JeepCherokee also earned the ‘best in class’ designation from Euro NCAP in the Medium Off-road 4X4 category for the year 2013. This recognition is given from Euro NCAP to the models tested during the year that have achieved the highest scores in their respective class. The best vehicle in the Small Off-road 4X4 class, recommended by Euro NCAP for its outstanding safety performance is the new generation of the Jeep mid-size Sport Utility Vehicle.

In 2013, a total of 33 cars were tested in seven different categories. The top achievers gained the highest overall scores, calculated from the results achieved in adult, child, pedestrian protection and safety assist tests.

The first safety element of the new Jeep Cherokee is represented by the new “Compact U.S. Wide (CUS-wide)” architecture, comprising a solid vehicle structure built with 65 % high-strength steel. Jeep engineers then added more than 70 active and passive safety and security features, including an array of innovative systems.

Standard safety features on the new Jeep Cherokee consist of seven standard airbags (front seats multistage air bags, side bags, window bags, driver side knee air bag), ESC (Electronic Stability Control) with rollover mitigation (ERM) and ABS with off-road calibration. To ensure maximum protection, the complete offering of safety features available or optional on the new Jeep Cherokee includes new systems, such as the innovative Forward Collision Warning with Crash Mitigation, ParkSense Parallel and Perpendicular Park Assist, Adaptive Cruise Control with Stop&Go, Lanesense Lane Departure Warning, Blind Spot Monitoringand Rear Cross Path Detection.

One of the most innovative systems fitted on the new Jeep Cherokee is the Forward Collision Warning with Crash mitigation, which detects any traffic-gap changes and in the case of a rapidly approaching obstacle in front of the vehicle activates the brakes and alerts the driver in order to have him perform the necessary corrective action.

The ParkSense Parallel/Perpendicular Park Assist feature in the new Jeep Cherokee uses ultrasonic parking sensors on the bumper to find and guide the customer into an available parking space when the driver initiates parking maneuvers. The parking guidance system controls the steering angle automatically; the driver controls the gear position, brake, and accelerator. Parallel parking is possible on either side of the car; during perpendicular parking, the vehicle is reversed into the space.

The Adaptive Cruise Control with Stop&Go (ACC), when activated, decreases the vehicle’s pre-set cruise-control speed when closing in on another vehicle in the same lane, or when another vehicle pulls into the same lane. ACC will accelerate to the pre-set speed when the vehicle in front speeds up or moves into another lane. The system will also maintain a driver adjustable distance between the vehicle and the one in front of it and is particularly useful when driving in adverse meteorological conditions or in situations of reduced visibility.

The Lanesense Lane Departure Warning system uses a camera-based vision sensor to establish the Jeep Cherokee’s position on the road. If an unintentional lane drift occurs, determined by trajectory change and the absence of turn-signal activation, the system will deliver a visual warning and a haptic warning – the subtle introduction of torque from the electric power steering (EPS) system. If the driver unintentionally drifts too far, the system provides a secondary visual warning.

The Blind Spot Monitoring uses dual ultra-wideband radar sensors to aid the driver when changing lanes or if being passed by or passing unseen vehicles. The system notifies the driver of vehicle(s) in their blind spot via illuminated icons on the side-view mirror and with a driver-selected audible chime.

Lastly, the Rear Cross Path (RCP) detection assists the drivers in parking lot situations. This system warns drivers backing out of parking spaces of traffic moving toward their vehicle. It activates any time the vehicle is in Reverse. The driver is notified of vehicle(s) crossing behind the vehicle via illuminated icons on the side-view mirror and with a driver-selected audible chime.

Another prestigious safety recognition was earned last year in the U.S., where the new Jeep Cherokee received the highest-possible score in each of four Insurance Institute of Highway Safety (IIHS) tests to determine a Top Safety Pick.

Top Safety Pick testing simulates a side impact with a large SUV or pickup truck, front moderate overlap impact, roof-crush consistent with a rollover, and a rear collision capable of inducing whiplash. In each of these, the new Jeep Cherokee recorded the highest-possible rating of “good” thanks to its complete offering of safety and security features, many of which – such as the Cherokee’s 65 % content-ratio of advanced-technology steel and seven standard air bags – help protect in the event of collision.

The new Jeep Cherokee features thoughtful, state-of-the-art, high-tech features and amenities that are intuitive, easy-to-use and provide utmost on-board comfort and infotainment.

New Wireless Charging Pad

The optional, innovative Wireless Charging Pad is concealed in the upper tray of the central armrest and it enables wireless charging of any smartphone that is QI wireless charging capable.

To charge a device, customers can simply place it where a mechanical docking station affords secure storage.

New 7-inch full-colour reconfigurable instrument cluster display

Filling the gauge cluster in front of the driver is the world-class thin-film transistor (TFT) 7-inch full-colour, premium multiview display featuring a reconfigurable function that enables the drivers to enjoy a customized user experience and receive information and vehicle feedback in the format they prefer, while keeping their hands on the wheel and eyes on the road.

The easy-to-use instrument cluster displays the basic information a driver needs at his or her fingertips but also allows the driver to add as much or as little information they desire. The driver can select from a multitude of information that can be displayed in the centre of the gauge cluster including turn-by-turn navigation, speed, real-time fuel economy, safety warnings, Adaptive Cruise Control with Stop&Go, audio information and Jeep-specific features including Selec-Terrain. The system is intuitive and can be arranged for a variety of views. Additionally, the top corners and centre of the display can be customized to show information at a glance, including current fuel economy, outside temperature, time and compass direction.

Once a main screen is chosen, it becomes the default setting, remembering the user’s selection upon restarting the Cherokee. Vehicle concerns are instantly reported to the driver via pop-up warning messages on the display. Text warning messages are automatically stored so a driver can review the message at their convenience.

The new Jeep Cherokee also offers the advanced UConnect system, featuring an 8.4-inch touchscreen multimedia command centre. This sophisticated system, standard on all models, clearly shows all information necessary for driving and on-board comfort.

In order to grant maximum safety and ease of use, the UConnect allows the driver to adjust the audio system, climate controls, heated/ventilated seats and more from either the touchscreen, the controls located on the centre stack below the touchscreen, or with voice activated commands.

The user-friendly 8.4-inch color UConnect touchscreen including navigation is standard on all trim levels.

In addition, and in order to grant maximum safety and ease of use, the new Cherokee features the newly designed leather-wrapped three-spoke Jeep steering wheel with audio, voice and speed controls. This feature allows the drivers to keep their hands on the steering wheel and interact with the instruments easily, adding a new level of technical sophistication.

To enhance the driving experience to the maximum level of pleasure and comfort, a premium Alpine, 506-watt sound system featuring nine speakers and a subwoofer, is also available.

UConnect 8.4 system

The award-winning UConnect 8.4 is designed to facilitate a fully integrated infotainment experience within one solution, meaning all feature components including GPS, voice recognition functionality and additional entertainment features are built into a single hardware platform instead of being delivered as separate components.

The UConnect infotainment system features faster response times, increased voice recognition capabilities and more realistic navigation than systems previously on board.

 

From the driver’s seat, everything the driver sees, touches – and even speaks to using voice commands – is enhanced to increase function, connectivity and responsiveness. Not only does it work better, it looks better packaged in more premium materials and elegant graphics.

With a spacious 8.4-inch touchscreen, the new platform offers more screen real estate for drivers to access the main infotainment features, including radio, mobile phone, media-player, I-Pod or smartphone and navigation. The platform delivers faster response times and sharper navigation and also offers drivers more extensive voice recognition capabilities – ensuring features can be accessed by voice control without compromising safety. A 3D-terrain model, 3D-cities and 3D-landmarks make navigation more realistic than ever. Entering destinations is a “one-shot” action, with the city, street and building number all in one natural sequence. New UConnect with 8.4" touchscreen and satellite navigation is an available as standard on all trim levels.

Jeep Cherokee & Mopar®

The new Jeep Cherokee is a further expression of the intense and fruitful collaboration that links the Jeep brand to Mopar®, the reference brand for Genuine Parts and Accessories for Fiat Chrysler Automobiles brands. There are more than 100 exclusive Mopar accessories dedicated to the new Jeep Cherokee that match it perfectly, while complying totally with its technical, aesthetic and mechanical characteristics. Moreover, Mopar products are unique because they are developed hand-in-hand with the same engineering teams who design the vehicle: this direct link is something that other aftermarket companies are not in a position to provide.

Jeep Cherokee MANUFACTURING

Toledo, Ohio, has been the proud “home of Jeep” for more than 70 years. The first Jeep vehicles were built in the former Parkway Plant until the new Toledo North facility began assembling the Jeep Cherokee in 2001. With the launch of the all-new Jeep Cherokee, a new chapter in the decades-old story of Jeep and Toledo is being written at the Toledo Assembly Complex.

That chapter began in November 2011 when Chrysler Group announced that the Company would invest $500 million in the Toledo Assembly Complex and add 1,100 jobs on a second shift for the production of the next-generation Jeep SUV.

Because the all-new Jeep Cherokee differs significantly from its predecessor, the plant had to make a number of changes in the build process to accommodate the new vehicle architecture. The most visible change was the addition of a 23,400 m2 building expansion to the existing body shop.

The dimensional differences of the new vehicle also necessitated changes to the assembly line. To ensure that the new Jeep Cherokee launched with the best possible quality, the Toledo Assembly Complex implemented and aligned all of the best practices and technologies from other Chrysler Group and FIAT facilities.

The Complex also went through a complete transformation as part of World Class Manufacturing (WCM), an extensive and thorough process aiming at reducing waste, increasing productivity, and improving quality and safety in a systematic and organized way. WCM engages the workforce to provide and implement suggestions on how to improve their jobs and their plants.

Production of the new Jeep Cherokee at the Toledo North Assembly Plant began in June 2013

A choice of three trim levels including the new Trailhawk model for best-in class off-road driving

The all-new Jeep Cherokee is available in three different trim levels: the Longitude, Limited and Trailhawk.

The Longitude model offers high levels of functionality and comfort to meet customers’ demands, and the Limited is the top-of-the-range trim level in terms of equipment, technological contents and exclusivity. The Limited offers a rich array of appointments and is made even more exclusive by Bright exterior accents, perforated Nappa leather seating with power-adjustable, heated and ventilated front seats, 18-inch aluminum wheels, power liftgate, UConnect 8.4-inch touchscreen Radio and Bi-Xenon headlamps.

In addition, for those customers looking for best-in class off-road capability, the Trailhawk model offers a distinctive, aggressive look, standard suspension lift and special off-road equipment including the Jeep Active Drive Lock system with low gears and locking rear differential. The locking rear differential is selectable in any low range terrain mode, but will lock automatically when driving in certain modes, such as “Rock,” to maximize tractive effort at the tyre patch that can support it. The Trailhawk also includes aggressive approach and departure angles – thanks to the unique front and rear fascias - one-inch factory lift, skid plates and a signature rear red tow hook.

The 3.2l V6 Pentastar petrol engine paired to the nine-speed automatic transmission is available on the Limited and Trailhawk trim levels. The 2.4l Tigershark MultiAir L4 petrol engine is available on the Longitude FWD model locally.
