Motorpoint seems to have become the international place to be when it comes to great savings, after a customer travelled from France to grab a bargain Vauxhall Zafira as it was cheaper to buy the vehicle from the UK’s leading car supermarket than it would be across the Channel.
Former British resident, Ivan Tattersall, from Cotes D’Armor, Brittany, first came across Motorpoint in 2003, when he bought a Vauxhall Zafira from the car supermarket whilst he was still living in the UK.
When Ivan decided to upgrade his Zafira to a newer version, he began to search through local French newspapers and garages, but found the prices to be too expensive, especially when combined with the high emissions tax applicable on registration in France. Having been very happy with the previous car he’d bought from Motorpoint, Ivan decided to have a look through the company’s website and found what he was searching for.
Ivan purchased his car entirely online, dealing with Motorpoint’s call centre and collecting the car from the Peterborough branch of the car supermarket, which was the first time he’d seen the car.
The ’10 plate Vauxhall Zafira 1.7 Cdti Ecoflex Elite purchased by Ivan, was priced at just £10,999, offering a customer saving of £14,814* based on if you decide to go for a nearly new car like this one versus buying one brand new. In fact, if Ivan had bought the same Zafira in France, it would’ve cost him around £7,000 more than Motorpoint’s price.
Ivan said: “I was finding that the high emissions taxes in France were seriously restricting my choice of engine but when I visited Motorpoint, there was enough choice and value on the site for me to find exactly what I was looking for. Good job as the 1.7 engine saved us 750 euros in tax as opposed to the 1.9 version! It was also helpful that Motorpoint’s site listed the emissions of each car.

This is not the first time a customer has travelled hundreds of miles to take advantage of the savings available from Motorpoint. In July, Dan Love, from Central Otago, New Zealand, journeyed over 11,000 miles to collect a Fiat Doblo van from the Derby site after also completing the buying process online, as purchasing a similar van in New Zealand was more expensive even when taking into account transportation costs.
