Burchmore’s has struck gold! Well, gold in the used car game anyway. It has acquired a consignment of Toyota Corollas – which are like gold amongst used car buyers.
“No car is more sought-after amongst second-hand car buyers,” explains Les Cox, dealer principal at Burchmore’s in Sandton.
Cox knows the Toyota brand extremely well, having served as general manager and subsequently director of McCarthy Toyota Sinoville from 1994 until the end of 2010. “These C segment sedans are the darlings of new and used car buyers alike. In fact, they are the country’s and the world’s favourite cars,” he reveals.
While the Corolla is sold all over the world, this is a particularly strong market for the car. The first generation Corolla was launched in Japan in October 1966. It arrived in this country in 1975 at the height of a fuel crisis and was an instant success. The Corolla became the country’s best seller in 1982 and it is South Africa’s favourite family sedan – a position it has held for more than three decades.
It’s a firm favourite amongst used car buyers too. “South Africans adore the Corolla because it’s an extremely reliable vehicle that will never ever let you down,” notes Cox.
But the challenge is always availability. “When we get a used Corolla, it is always snapped up in record time. Demand consistently exceeds supply,” reveals Darryl Jacobson, managing director of the country’s leading vehicle auctioneer.
It is thus that Burchmore’s, part of the Bidvest Group, believes that it has struck gold – with the arrival of a 100-strong consignment of Corollas.
These vehicles – a mix of 1.3 and 1.6-litre derivatives – will fall under the hammer at Burchmore’s in Sandton at 10.30 am on Saturday, June 2.
“They are all low mileage and mostly under warranty. Customers will be able to view the vehicles on our website and also at our premises the day before the auction,” comments Jacobson.
He expects a full house at the auction. “It is extremely rare to obtain a consignment like this – we anticipate lots of excitement in the auction arena,” predicts the Burchmore’s MD.
Cox shares his enthusiasm. “I have been here for two years and this is the first time that we have received a consignment like this; I am thrilled to be able to offer these vehicles to the market,” he comments.
“Who would have guessed that we would be able to offer our customers the world’s top selling nameplate in motoring history in such large numbers?” Cox concludes.
