International Moth sailor Simon Payne has started preparations for the sport’s World Championships in a manner befitting someone racing under the Abarth colours – fast and highly successful.

The former Olympic competitor, who has also won the Moth class British, European and World Championship titles, was victorious earlier this month in the International Moth UK Grand Prix Open, and followed that up by becoming French National Champion.

Based out of Hayling Island Sailing Club, Hampshire, Simon uses a sporty Abarth Punto EVO as his road transport, which has proved extremely valuable as he travels the country attending race meetings. His next big event, though, will be further from home – the 2012 Zhik Moth World Championships at Lake Garda, Italy in August.

“I am very pleased with how my year is going so far,” says Simon. “Preparation for the ‘Worlds’ is going well and, of course, it is rewarding to have been successful in these recent events when I have been competing against very accomplished sailors.”

“We are delighted with Simon’s success as he builds towards the World Championships this summer,” says Ivan Gibson, head of Abarth UK. “Control, performance and adrenaline are central to World Champion athletes and we are delighted that Simon has chosen the Abarth Punto EVO as the perfect fit for his lifestyle.”

The Abarth Punto EVO is powered by the award-winning MultiAir engine that gives the car its unique combination of performance and eco-friendliness. Developed by Fiat Powertrain Technologies, the punchy 1.4-litre turbo is the most sporting interpretation yet of the company’s revolutionary MultiAir technology.

This innovation enables the Abarth Punto EVO to accelerate from 0-62mph in 7.9 seconds yet still return an impressive 47.1mpg on the Combined Cycle. And by employing Start&Stop and a Gear Shift Indicator (GSI) this Abarth both conforms to Euro 5 emissions regulations and emits an un-performance car-like 142g/km of CO2.

The Abarth Punto EVO starts at £16,852 (OTR).
