SOUTH AFRICA Johannesburg, 18 August 2011 – Last week, Ford Motor Company Southern Africa (FMCSA) witnessed the ecstatic Top 9 South African Idols finalists personalise the Fiesta 1.6 Sport, which the lucky Idols winner will eventually drive away with.
Just a week after the Top 10 prize handover where the Idols received customised luggage, because even Idols have baggage, the aspiring Top 9 Idols got together with Ford to design their ideal Fiesta exterior using computer aided design. One of the Idols, Freddie Van Dango, commented that although last year’s Idols winner, Elvis Blue, got to drive away in the zippy Ford Figo, he was especially excited about being able to customise this year’s grand prize, the Fiesta 1.6 Sport.
From Dave van Vuuren’s chilli orange design to Dene Foster’s sassy pink and Phaksy Mngomezulu’s white car with gold stars, this year’s winner will definitely be driving away with a looker.
The contestants provided a rough pencil sketch of how they would customise the exterior of their Fiesta, and presented these to the designers at Greensky, a vehicle customisation company which interpreted their sketches on computer and came up with the final design. The designs were aired on M-Net and Mzansi Magic over the past weekend.
Ford will apply the personalised designs to the cars of the Top two Idols, but only the winner will get to drive away in his or her creation. The car sporting the runner up’s design will be awarded to the winner of the Idols Viewers Competition.
This is the second year that Ford has sponsored Idols. Last year, it put the Top 6 contestants through their paces on the racetrack, teaching them valuable advanced driving skills as part of Ford’s new Driving Skills for Life (DSFL) programme where L’loyd Cele and Elvis Blue first experienced the Figo, of which Elvis is now the proud owner. This year, Ford has kicked its involvement up a notch.
