02 OCTOBER 2014 – General Motors South Africa (GMSA) has had consistent sales performance over the first nine months of 2014. Overall, sales of Chevrolet, Opel and Isuzu vehicles have increased by 0.7% (47 817 vs 47 472 units) compared to the same period last year with the overall industry experiencing a drop of -3% (482 955 vs 495 644).

GMSA sold a total of 5 513 units in September 2014 thanks to a solid performance in the light commercial vehicle segment.

“Our products continue to perform well especially in the light commercial vehicle segment. Looking at the balance of the year we expect the market to remain about 5 % down on last year. We also expect rental and government sales to soften due to seasonal buying trends in these sectors,” comments Brian Olson, GMSA Vice President of Vehicle Sales, Service and Marketing.

Key performers for GMSA in September include the locally assembled Chevrolet Utility with 1 334 units sold and the Isuzu KB which retailed 1 221 units.

In the passenger segments, the budget-focused Chevrolet Aveo and Spark continue to be popular with South African buyers snatching 557 and 898 units, respectively. The Opel Corsa had one of the model’s best performances this year with 432 units retailed followed by the Chevrolet Cruze with 247 units retailed.

September marked a significant sales improvement for the overall industry with a total of 60 854 new vehicles sold. The 11.5 % sales improvement over the same period in 2013 was driven by unusually strong rental and government sales.
