THE high-speed Formula Volkswagen single-seater series lived up to their reputation as being the fastest four-wheeled formula in the WesBank Super Series at Zwartkops on Saturday. The seventh round of the championship saw the usual suspects producing some solid performances as they fought for points.

Volkswagen Formula One

Race one was all about Simon Moss (38 - Southern Sun / Terry Moss Racing) racing ahead to claim victory after 10 laps. Second to Moss was Jayde Kruger (1 – Investchem / First Freight / GF Plastics) who crossed the line less than a half-second behind the race winner with Nicholas van Weely (87 – Anglorand) a further 0.8 of a second back in third place.

Kruger's qualifying times provided him with pole position in both races, but a slight loss of traction in the first race was enough to open the door to let Moss through for that race one victory.

Posting times just over one minute per lap saw the racers having to combat the high temperatures on race day as they used all of their concentration to keep their Formula Volkswagens on track to delivery their best performances.

For Greg Wilson (26 – Reflex Solutions) the event proved a big step up from his usual racing in the Formula Vee series. The high-tech engineering of the Formula Volkswagens takes some getting used too, but he acquitted himself well for a first time out and he posted an eighth and sixth place finish for the day.

In race two Ernie van der Walt (95 – Ferodo Racing) was forced to take avoiding action when Barry Ingle (31 – Hollard / Campos Transport) and Nic Chapman (14 – Bamboo Rock Mining) who made contact in turn four with Ingle spinning in front of Van der Walt. The result was that Ingle lost the wing on his race car while van der Walt lost track position trying to stay out of trouble.

That second race saw Kruger put on a faultless performance to lead the field to the finish with Moss and Van Weely in pursuit. There are just two race meetings left in the 2012 season and the racers head to the penultimate round at Killarney with Kruger leading the championship by 21 points over his rival Moss and Van Weely.
