Engen Volkswagen Cup ready for high-speed weekend in East London
FIERCE competition is expected in the Engen Volkswagen Cup championship on Saturday, 29 June. This event is round five of the 2013 championship and racing will take place on the fastest circuit this season for the racers.
The long straight at the East London circuit will see these single-make Volkswgen Polo Vivo racers getting up to their highest speeds possible – and then fighting it out for position as they head through the tight and twisty parts of the circuit. As a series where all the cars have the same power, the drivers who can keep their momentum up through the slower parts of the track – and then get on the power as early as possible to build a lead through the fast stuff.
At this point in the championship it is Kosie Weyers (5 – Engen Primax) who is the man to beat and he enjoys a clear lead of 53 points. If Weyers scores no points at all in East London and either of his closest rivals, Dewald Brummer (22 – UMP / Horne Hydraulics / MAD Racing) or Mathew Hodges (12 – ITR Africa / 959 Panelbeaters) who are level on points, puts in a perfect performance on the weekend, Weyers will still lead the series by a point.
The fight in the Masters category, for drivers over 27, is not quite so clear-cut. Eddie Rodrigues (M7 – SEW Eurodrive) leads the category but finds himself under threat from Ettiene du Toit (M4 - Zenith Product Design) who claimed victory at the last event which was held at Zwartkops Raceway. Ten points separate these two drivers and Juan Gerber (M8 – Carfind.co.za) – who claimed second at Zwartkops is just six points further adrift.
The East London event will also see the return of guest racer Marius Roberts (M3 – Volkswagen Motorsport / Ignition TV). Roberts was originally scheduled to race only in the Zwartkops round but now finds himself behind the wheel for both East London and the Phakisa event that follows. As a television presenter and racing driver, Roberts acquitted himself quite well at the first outing, but will undoubtedly find the high-speed East London event a rather different adventure.
Motorsport fans can look forward to two action-packed races at the event, with racers in this packed single-make series showcasing both racing talent and providing an overdose of high speed action.
