Kosie Weyers (5 – Engen Primax) proved to be the hometown hero at Killarney on Saturday. With a double-victory and first overall for the day in the Engen Volkswagen Cup series, Weyers has bolstered his championship hopes with a 27 point lead after the first two rounds.

Weyers made his move from second on the grid in race one to grab the lead from Shaun La Reservée (14 – Alpine Motors / Compendium Insurance Group). La Reservée mounted a counter-attack that lasted the rest of the eight lap race.

Mark Silverwood (32 – OKI Printing Solutions / Q8 Oil) had a good start in race one, moving from a fifth place start to fourth. Shortly after that though he exited the race due to a gear selector nut, the loss of which meant he could not select any gears. Ahead of Silverwood, Tasmin Pepper (31 – PG Glass / Pastomark) and Bryan Morgan (41 – Great Soft / Great Accounts) were involved in an on-track incident that sent Morgan to the back of the pack.

La Reservée pressured Weyers throughout the race as he tried to take point but Weyers would have none of it. The finishing line saw them cross virtually side-by-side in a dash for the line, with the Engen Primax Vivo leading the field home by 0.095 of a second. Third place in that first race was taken by Pepper, claiming her first podium result of the season.

Race two saw Weyers again dash for the lead, this time from a third place start on the grid. Mathew Hodges (12 – ITR Africa / 959 Panelbeaters) set off in pursuit of the race leader, but Weyers was not letting anyone get past him.

In that race a turn one incident saw Simon Moss (38 – Watermax / Tsogo Sun) hit and spin Pepper who was then hit by another three competitors. This incident eliminated Pepper, Juan Gerber (M8 – Carfind.co.za) and Ryan Rhode (17 – Temo Transport & Plant Hire). Mandla Mdakane (18 – Engen Primax) who also hit Pepper continued, but found himself at the back of the field.

Fourth place starter Trevor Bland (15 – PG Glass / Suburban Panelbeaters) managed to avoid the problems in this race and moved into third, where he finished ahead of pole starter La Reservée and Silverwood who started in ninth but worked his way up to a strong fourth place finish.

Guest racer Denis Droppa (M3 – VW Motorsport / Star Motoring) who competed in the first two seasons of the Engen Volkswagen Cup championship in 1997 and '98 found that the series is just as tough today as it was when he competed full-time. While the more experienced racers outpaced him, Droppa made good progress during the weekend improving his laptimes by three seconds and within 2.3 seconds of the race winner.

Droppa competed as a Masters racer, the category for Engen Volkswagen Cup competitors over the age of 27. In this category it was Eddie Rodrigues (M7 – SEW Eurodrive) who put in the best performance of the day, winning both race one and race two – with his second race result in eighth place overall.

In race one Rodrigues was followed by Ettiene du Toit (M4 – Zenith Product Design) and Gerhard Henning (M5 – Goldwagen Roodepoort), producing a carbon copy result of this standing in race two as well.

The Engen Volkswagen Cup field will head to Port Elizabeth for round three of the Super Series. Here the championship will compete on the Aldo Scribante Raceway circuit on Saturday, April 6.
