Engen Volkswagen Cup deliver action-packed event in PE

Engen Volkswagen Cup championship leader Kosie Weyers (5 – Engen Xtreme) is celebrating another double-victory after round three of the season racing at Aldo Scribante Raceway in Port Elizabeth. Weyers produced an inch-perfect race performance to repeat his Killarney performance and take both top podium places on the day.

It was Dewald Brummer (22 – UMP / Horne Hydraulics / MAD Racing) that led from the start of race one, with Weyers in hot pursuit. While Weyers was determined to take the lead, Brummer was not giving in without a fight and the two duelled throughout the race as they fought for the coveted leading position.

Behind them, Mathew Hodges (12 – ITR Africa / 959 Panelbeaters) had to keep himself in third place by staying ahead of the duel raging for fourth between Bryan Morgan (41 – Great Accounts / Great Soft) and Shaun La Reservée (14 – Alpine Motors / Compendium Insurance).

For Etienne du Toit (M4 – Zenith Product Design) Scribante showed him off as the fastest Masters competitor on the day. Du Toit usurped Eddie Rodrigues (M7 – SEW Eurodrive) at this event who found his performance hampered by a gear selector that would not do its job.

In race two, the performance of the leading pair was very similar to that which took place in the first race of the day. Weyers and Brummer showed the rest of the field a clean pair of heels and kept their fight for the lead well clear of the chasing pack.

Throughout the second race the drivers were pushing as hard as possible in an effort to make up places. This was evident by the amount of dust that was raised out of the faster corners with drivers pushing for every inch of track space – and then just a little bit more.

It was Trevor Bland (15 – PG Glass / Alpine Motors) that claimed third in race two, ahead of local racer Simon Moss (38 – Tsogo Sun / Watermax).

The race day was typical of this single-make series that sees the Engen Primax-fuelled field in close-quarters competition. A few incidents during the day saw Robyn Kruger (11 - IndyOil), Daniel Rowe (33 - Ferodo Racing), Mandla Mdakane (18 - Engen Primax) and Adrian Wood (34 - Axcel) amongst the place casualties which cost them potential championship points.

With the Scribante event done, the field now moves inland to contest the equally challenging Zwartkops Raceway in Pretoria in early May.
