Dr. Thomas Steg appointed Volkswagen Group General Representative for External Relations and Government Relations

Wolfsburg, 19 December 2011 - Dr. Thomas Steg (51) has been appointed the Volkswagen Group General Representative for External Relations and Government Relations effective February 1, 2012.

Thomas StegThe present head of External Relations, Jörg Waldeck (45), will take on new responsibilities in the Group. In his new function Dr. Steg will report direct to the CEO of Volkswagen Aktiengesellschaft, Prof. Dr. Martin Winterkorn, and will hold responsibility for the Group’s external relations and government relations worldwide.

Like Investor Relations and Communications, this department is part of Group Communications, which is headed by Stephan Grühsem, who commented: “I am delighted to welcome the experienced political professional Thomas Steg to our team.” Dr. Thomas Steg began his career in 1986 as an editor with Braunschweiger Zeitung.

The social science graduate then worked as a press spokesperson, first for DGB Lower Saxony/Bremen, then for Lower Saxony’s Ministry of Social Affairs from 1991 and subsequently for the SPD parliamentary group in Lower Saxony from 1995.

In 1998 he became deputy head of the office of Federal Chancellor Gerhard Schröder at the Federal Chancellery, before holding the post of deputy government spokesman from 2002 to 2009. Dr. Steg has been an independent communications consultant since 2009.
