Fifth wheels from Fontaine

Fontaine, the world’s largest manufacturer of pressed steel and cast fifth wheels, will announce two unique coupling systems at this year’s CV Show: a sensor-operated fifth wheel to alert the driver in the event of safety clip or handle displacement after coupling, and a press-button, air-assisted fifth wheel which takes the strain out of handle operation.

Once the ignition is switched on, the system self-checks sensor functions, showing a green light with a short beep until the trailer is coupled. Mis-coupling is alerted by a flashing red light and continuous beep. Once the king pin sensor detects the king pin, amber and red lights will illuminate until the correct coupling procedure is complete. However, if the safety clip or handle become displaced, an internal and external red LED light and intermittent alarm will sound.

The air-assisted fifth wheel has a unique press button handle operation which is connected to the tractor air system and adjacent to the fifth wheel. This function can usually only be carried out by reaching under and pulling the handle outwards and away from the fifth wheel.

Premier Components in Workshop

A new exhibitor in the Workshop area of the CV Show this year will be Premier Components. The company was established in 1990 to service car parts remanufacturers worldwide and has since added truck and trailer parts to its portfolio.

Premier Components specialises in purchasing old units that have failed – including engines, gearboxes, brake compressors, valves and clutches and more. Instead of scrapping these products, Premier Components can use make good use of them.

The Weighweb system provides internet-based reporting software, allowing fleet operators or international enforcement agencies to view, interrogate and report on all weighing data gathered by their Supaweigh 4000 and 5000c axle weighbridge systems via a password-protected internet link and dedicated login facilities configured for each client.

The company’s decision to showcase the new trailers is a sign of confidence in the ever-expanding CV Show and demonstrates an increasingly buoyant trailer market across the UK.

“We’ve seen an improvement in order levels and customer confidence in the trailer market over the last few months,” explained SDC Director Paul Bratton. “The DfT’s trial of longer semi-trailers has given us a fantastic opportunity to work more closely with operators to deliver bespoke solutions which really meet their needs.

The data on the server is stored for two years as a back-up, according to EU regulations.

The telematics unit used in the service also allows other fleet telematics services to be offered to end-customers, eg tracking and tracing, driver style analysis and fuel management. Eliminating the need for several units in the vehicle saves end customers’ costs and resources. Aplicom offers its products and services to end customers through its partner network consisting of service providers and system integrators.
