Marc Cronje/Robin Houghton (Sasol Ford Fiesta) stamped their early authority on the Polokwane Rally in Limpopo this morning by winning the opening two stages of the event.
Cronje/Houghton lead Jan Habig/Robert Paisley (Basil Read Ford Fiesta) by 18 seconds and Hergen Fekken/Pierre Arries (BP Volkswagen Polo) by 23 seconds. Championship leaders Johnny Gemmell/Carolyn Swan (Castrol Toyota Auris) are fourth 29 seconds behind.
The first stage was a brutal opening test of 31 Kilometres which took the leading pair of Cronje/Houghton 19.5 Minutes to complete. It was very technical with 18 270 degree switchbacks creating a lot of dust and resulted in several overshoots.
The rally is getting quicker, stage two was also technical but opened up a bit producing faster times. Stage three over 25 kilometres will be the fastest so far.
Leeroy Poulter/Elvéne Coetzee running first on the road this morning damaged the front suspension of their Castrol Toyota Auris and are battling to the first service park after stage three.
The leading vehicles are expected at the first service park at Tom Naude Technical High school at 12:45.
