At the end of May General Motors South Africa announced that it had begun shipping the locally manufactured Spark to its dealer network. Along with this announcement from the Port Elizabeth based subsidiary of global automotive giant General Motors came the news of an exciting price repositioning for this stylish entry level Chevrolet.

Chevrolet Spark

“The localisation of the Spark has allowed us to apply a meaningful reduction in price for our popular Chevrolet Spark,” says Malcolm Gauld, GMSA’s Vice President Sales and Marketing. “The price reduction on the Spark 1.2L amounts to 7% with a retail price for this first tier on the Spark product ladder now R107 500 inclusive of VAT. For those that want to go a bit more up market with their trim level with an upgrade to the Spark LS the localisation programme has allowed a saving of 9,7% on the retail selling price with this model now costing R116 500 inclusive of VAT. This repositioning of the Spark has made it a serious contender in the entry level market and an excellent value proposition.

“The local production of the Chevrolet Sparks marks the completion of the second phase of a three phase major investment programme at our Struandale plant that will bring GMSA fully into line with the government’s Automotive Production Development Plan (APDP) with a targeted annual local production of 50 000 vehicles. The first phase of the investment programme was completed with the introduction of the new Chevrolet Utility late in 2011. The local production of the Spark, the second locally produced model in our line up, sees the completion of the second phase. Phase three, the introduction of a new high volume light commercial model, will be completed during the course of 2013.

“The successful implementation of the localisation programme for the Spark has brought numerous advantages for the company. One of these is a significant saving in costs and a degree of insulation from imported cost pressures, another is improved manufacturing synergies with other overseas GM plants, such as GM Korea. More important than these however is the opportunity to create a number of sustainable new job opportunities, both at our own manufacturing facilities and at component suppliers.

“A further benefit that comes with localisation of the Spark is the opportunity afforded to us to tailor the range to specific local market requirements. This flexibility will be brought into play later in the year when we add an exciting third model with a local flavour to the Spark range.

“Important for our customers is the fact that these benefits are being passed on into the market in the form of the price reductions highlighted earlier. The cost savings have been achieved without compromise to specification.

“The Spark is a now, more than ever, a serious contender on value for money specification in the entry level segment. Couple this with class leading safety specification, including ABS brakes, Electronic Brake Force Distribution, and airbags for both driver and front seat passenger - standard on all models in the range - and the Spark emerges clearly ahead of the opposition in its segment.”
