Burn, the distributor of floatation and protective clothing for the water-sporting industry, will once again be sponsoring the cable-pulled wakeboarding display at the Johannesburg Boat Show, which starts this Thursday at the Nasrec Expo Centre.

The Johannesburg Boat Show starts on Thursday August 8 and runs through until Sunday, August 11, and kicks off the summer season early in the Gauteng area.

The wakeboarding displays will be run on the shallow waters of the Nasrec Marina, which vary in depth from half a metre to a metre, and place a skill premium on the contracted wakeboarders taking part.

Heading up the list of riders will be Justin Selby, 10-times Springbok wakeboarder, who also finished third in the 2012 World Wakeboarding Championships.

“We only really need 300 mm of water to get going,” says Selby, “but it’s not for your average rider. We will be getting up to about 30 km/h at Nasrec. I love these public displays at shows, because it gives me the chance to do interviews and interact with the public:

Fellow Burn wakeboarder Deidre van Niekerk will also be at Nasrec for the second year in a row.

“Wakeboarding keeps me sane in this crazy world,” she says. “The Nasrec water is shallow, so on each run you never know if you are going to come out okay. But with wakeboarding, the more you do it, the more you relax. I love it, because each time, it’s like a step into the unknown.”
