BMW GS bikers ride for a greener South Africa!
Midrand – From the 6th to 9th October 2011 owners of BMW GS bikes across South Africa will join together to experience the 2011 BMW GS Eco Challenge, the annual celebration of their unique off-road motorcycles. This year GS owners will experience an adventure unlike previous years. The selected destination lies in the heart of the Eastern Free State – Clocolan.
Coupled with this new experience and whilst the bikers enjoy the beauty of the natural environment, situated within the backdrop of the magnificent Maluti region, GS owners will also be contributing towards the sustainability of the eco system. BMW Motorrad, the motorcycle business unit of BMW South Africa, is anticipating a committed turnout of more than 600 riders for this challenge. And for every participating motorcycle, BMW Motorrad will donate one tree to Food & Trees for Africa’s programme, ‘Trees for Homes’ – South Africa’s national greening and food gardening enterprise.
Each of the trees donated by BMW will be planted in the Clocolan area. A commemorative tree will also be planted at the BMW Motorrad Head Office in Midrand – in addition to the 510 trees that were recently planted by BMW for the 2010 rally offset – thus totalling 1 000 trees to be planted to date.
“Each year we endeavour to ensure the GS riders experience an event that is one of a kind. This year, the landscape captures the very essence of the GS experience – the perfect terrain GS motorcycles relish in,” said Rob Holder, General Manager of BMW Motorrad.
“We at BMW take sustainability very seriously and this thread is woven into the core of everything we do; from the manufacturing of our cars, to the production of our motorcycles as well as our social responsibility programmes and our every day environment,” added Holder.
He says that the partnership between BMW and Food & Trees for Africa is a perfect fit. “We are able to provide an extraordinary experience to our customers, whilst at the same time being able to give back to the environment,” concluded Holder.
A certificate for the 600 trees being planted will be handed to BMW Motorrad while the first tree will also be planted in Clocolan on Friday, 7 October to kick off the GS Eco Challenge
