Glasgow, Scotland, 15 October 2012 – Andrew Muirhead, part of the Scottish Leather Group, has been specified as leather supplier to the latest fleet of new FirstGroup buses.

Andrew Muirhead Son Ltd

FirstGroup, headquartered in Aberdeen, announced a new £160 million bus order in 2011, the first 200 of which have been delivered as part of the ‘First for London’ fleet this summer, featuring low carbon leather from Glasgow’s Andrew Muirhead.

All of the First for London buses carry Andrew Muirhead’s ‘Orkney’ low carbon high performance leather, chosen by FirstGroup for its world-leading environmental credentials, quality, hygiene, luxury – to entice more customers out of their cars – and exceptional transport safety standards.

These standards have also led Andrew Muirhead to be specified by the rail, marine, automotive and aviation industries, and the company is the only leather manufacturer with test facilities recognised by the Civil Aviation Authority.  Andrew Muirhead leather is found in many trains, aircraft, coaches and cruise ships around the world, including British Airways and Virgin Atlantic – in economy, business and first class cabins, MAN Coaches, East Midlands Trains and several others.

Leather Firstgroup Busses

Andrew Muirhead Sales Director, Archie Browning, said: “We are delighted to have been selected to provide leather for the first batch of buses to join the new FirstGroup fleet.  As the UK’s largest bus operator, the Group clearly has a very exacting supplier selection process, which is very gratifying to have come through successfully with a large order like this.  The Group did not want to compromise on luxury and comfort for its rapidly growing number of passengers, and also demanded the very highest of environmental, safety and technical standards.  I am very proud of the high quality product Andrew Muirhead has delivered and look forward to travelling in one of the new buses soon.”

The locally sourced low carbon leather production process is underpinned by the Scottish Leather Group’s innovative Thermal Energy Plant.  Opened in 2010, the plant is the only one of its kind in the world leather industry, and takes what was previously waste sent to landfill, converting it directly to energy for heating the large volumes of water required in the manufacturing process.

Andrew Muirhead leather has been specified by many other well-known customers over the years, including Concorde, Morgan Motor Cars, Chancellor of the Exchequer (for his red leather Budget Box), the Royal and Ancient Golf Club of St. Andrews and many more.
