Abarth “A World of performance since 1949” at the 63rd Bologna International Motor Show

Abarth is showing up at the Bologna Motor Show with an original, spectacular stand where four world previews are being presented to once again lay emphasis on the brand’s uniqueness on the world motoring stage.

Abarth 500 2011 Full View

At the heart of the presentation is a concept very dear to Karl Abarth: “Sunday on the track, Monday at the office”, which the brand conveys by placing road vehicles designed for everyday use side-by-side with racing cars on an imaginary “road to performance”. After all, it is precisely from the world of racing that the brand draws technologies and values to then transfer them to the production of road vehicles.

The brand new Abarth 595 is at the starting line. Offered in the two “turismo” and “competizione” versions, it conceptually draws inspiration from the historic 595 model that Karl Abarth presented in 1963 as an offshoot of the Fiat 500.

New Abarth 500

The Abarth 595 symbolises the return to the customisation concept that enhances the performance of a “standard” car offering the power upgrade to 160 HP as standard. The new Abarth 595 expands the Abarth 500 product range, and is offered in two customisations: “turismo” and “competizione”.

The first is dedicated to those attentive to fashion trends, who love a type of sportiness “without going to an extreme”. The latter is designed for true customisation fans, who love to experience the thrill of sporty driving every day.

The two cars on display “race” along a platform coated with a special resin that evokes the atmosphere of a road… the ideal road of those who enjoy facing up to challenges in their everyday lives in a constant search for “everyday performance”. Starting from the road cars, the culmination is represented by the most complete expression of the Abarth brand’s sportiness.

Abarth Assetto Corsa 2011

The new 695 “Assetto Corse”, the new small super-sports car designed for racing on the track, is being presented to the Bologna public. This year it will debut in the single-make trophies. The new car will pair up with the 500 “Assetto Corse”, the highly successful star of the track over the past three years.

The fourth car being presented at the Bologna Motor Show is a new Limited Edition, the Abarth Punto Scorpione, dedicated to everyone who loves to pit themselves against any kind of challenge in a never-ending search for speed and performance both on the track and facing a downhill road. Abarth is in fact presenting the “Abarth Nitro” winter kit to go along with the new Limited Edition. Among other things, the kit contains the “Nitro Powered by Abarth” snowboard.

Abarth Competizione

The four new cars being presented therefore contribute to the already well-known successes the brand has enjoyed. More than 9,000 cars have been sold during 2011. The contribution of the Abarth 695 Tributo Ferrari has also been significant. Between its launch in July 2008 and today approximately 1500 cars have been delivered.

These figures contribute to confirming the good results the brand has recorded since its relaunch. Suffice it to say that since 2008 the brand has grown non-stop, as about 38,000 Abarth Punto and Abarth 500 cars sold, plus more than 9,500 performance kits for the two models, demonstrate.

Abarth Assetto Corsa

These sales successes have been partly made possible by the extraordinary network of dealers and official tuning shops, an organisation that is unique in its field and has further extended to other international markets such as Finland, Hong Kong and South Africa in 2011.

The brand is looking forward to this kind of success in other fields of business as well, with the launch of its Abarth official merchandising e-commerce website and the introduction of customer services as part of the “Abarth24h mobile” Iphone application.
Focus will also be placed on “Make it your race”, the project with which Abarth gave young people aged 18 to 35 the chance to make their lifelong dream come true: race against professional drivers on the track.

The Bologna Motor Show is the perfect stage for presenting the 2012 Abarth sporting programme. The formula adopted in conceiving the trophies this year as well makes the cost of entering the trophy extremely accessible to everyone, a concrete example of “democratizing” races in the true Scorpion spirit.

This practical approach confirms Abarth’s racing spirit and applies the same philosophy that has identified Abarth for fifty years: the transfer of racing experience to road cars in order to facilitate access to the world of racing.

Abarth 500

Abarth 595 “turismo” and Abarth 595 “competizione”
The new Abarth 595 is making its world premier in Bologna. This model ratifies the return to the concept of “deriving” standard models on which Karl Abarth built the Scorpion legend more than 60 years ago. With this new model the brand further expands the Abarth 500 range and is arriving with two customisations, “turismo” and “competizione”.

They address two different targets – the first more attentive to personality and comfort and the second more “racing purist” – but they both have one fundamental aspect in common: passion for the sportiness that distinguishes all Abarth models.

In both customisations the car is fitted with a 1.4 Turbo T-Jet engines whose power has been increased to a good 160 HP (118 kW) with the use of the standard engine customisation kit. The engine is a 1368 cm3 4 cylinder 16 valve unit (turbocharged with a fixed-geometry IHI turbocharger) that delivers exhilarating performance.

Abarth 500

Torque is 230 Nm at 3000 rpm in Sport mode. Top speed is 211 km/h while acceleration from 0 to 100 km/h takes place in just 7.4 seconds. This is partly achieved by the over boost function, activated by the “Sport” button that modulates control unit mapping and turbo pressure in addition to load on the steering wheel. Yet this typically Abarth performance comes with very frugal fuel consumption: 6.5 l/100 km over a combined cycle.

In terms of safety, the Abarth 595 follows the top standards the Abarth 500 guarantees. As on all the other Abarths, it offers standard the TTC (Torque Transfer Control) device that by improving the transfer of drive torque to the wheels, enhances the car road holding without compromising the fun to drive it. The car is equipped as standard with Xenon headlights with dipped and main beam functions for improved light emission and excellent efficiency under all weather conditions. These elements deliver three times the light intensity and duration of standard halogen lamp headlights.

The car is offered in two different customisations. With the “turismo” styling, the Abarth 595 is designed for everyone who loves sportiness and performance, and at the same time wants elegance and personality. Abarth is bringing back a few trend-setting elements with this customisation that have already in the past distinguished another highly successful car, the Abarth 500 Convertible.

Abarth 500 Turismo 2011

First and foremost is the two-tone livery which is being presented for the first time on a saloon. The car on display at the stand in Bologna flaunts a two-tone metallic Rosso Officina and Grigio Pista livery with white liner. It is embellished with the revival of the historic 595 logo in aluminium on the side panel and tailgate, the latter further personalised with the aluminium Turismo graphics. Gran Turismo inspired titanium-coloured 17″ alloy wheels contribute to the car’s elegance.

The Abarth 595 “turismo” offers as standard the electrically-operated manual Competizione gearbox with controls on the steering wheel, which exalts engine performance by reducing gearshift times. The gearshift paddles are placed on the sporty black leather steering wheel with perforated ears, which enhances the interiors together with the red leather sports seats.

The attention to detail that makes this customisation of the Abarth 595 unique is also emphasised by the special “flocking” treatment for the central tunnel and dashboard. It is the first time a state-of-the-art treatment in the fashion and design industry is applied to the automotive field. Pedal unit, kick plate and gearbox trim in the costly Alutex aluminium glass fibre material complete the standard equipment.

The second customisation, “competizione”, is dedicated to the more extreme sports enthusiasts, to the true “racing purists”, and is distinguished by elements that exalt its performance and sports car features to the utmost. The first element on the Abarth 595 “Competizione” is the 5-speed MT (Manual Transmission) gearbox that exalts personal driving style through a more direct relationship with the car.

The metallic Grigio Record livery is completed with 17″ titanium-coloured alloy wheels whose design is borrowed from Racing, with yellow Brembo brake calipers. Like for the “turismo” version, the side panel and tailgate are respectively embellished with the 595 and 595 “competizione” logo, both in aluminium.

Abarth 500 Turismo

The interiors also have a sporty and aggressive personality thanks to the “Abarth Corsa by Sabelt” leather and natural leather-coloured alcantara seats bearing the 595 logo embroidered on the integrated headrest. Special materials have been used to enhance the dashboard. Their appearance and finish call metal to mind to further accentuate the technical and sporty personality of this customisation.

The same treatment is adopted for the backrest of the seats. Lastly, the gear lever knob made of Ergal, kick plate, pedal unit and aluminium running board – all decorated with the Abarth motifs – draw on the outfitting found on racing cars. Completing the characterisation are side bands in the shade of matte titanium, also applied on the door mirror fairings.

To exalt the performance of the Abarth 595 even more, customisation kits for setup and brakes are available for both versions. They guarantee a unique driving experience in terms of performance, handling and safety. Safety is always the focus with an Abarth tuning, and with these two kits the braking system is strengthened and the ride is adjusted. The first fits perforated, self-ventilated front disc brakes (diameter 284 mm x 22 mm), perforated rear disc brakes (diameter 240 mm x 11 mm), and high performance front brake pads, whereas the second provides front and rear Koni shock absorbers with FSD valve, and specific red springs set lower than those on the original car.

To further confirm the search for the maximum level of customisation of the Abarth 595, and following the successful example already tried out on the “Abarth 500 Cabrio Italia” Limited Edition, the special Tramontano leather bags “Tribute to Abarth” are available. They are also in the “turismo” and “competizione” versions, matching the interior shade of the two customisations. These bags will become available in all the shades of leather used for Abarth 500 interiors starting in December.

Abarth 695 “Assetto Corse”
Designed for track racing, the Abarth 695 “Assetto Corse” conceptually depicts the continuity of the historic 695 brand that came into being in 2009 with the 695 Tributo Ferrari. This year it is represented by the Abarth 695 “Competizione”, the first Abarth street legal race car presented at the Frankfurt International Motor Show.

 The car also appears as the evolution of the Abarth 500 “Assetto Corse”, the “small and mean” protagonist of huge successes during the past three years of single-make trophies. The Abarth 695 “Assetto Corse” is characterised by an aggressive front decorated with a badge bearing the Abarth logo and, underneath, a broader bumper complete with aerodynamic spoiler and screen-printed grilles instead of the plastic masks of the standard version. Under the bonnet, fitted out with the classic bonnet clips in true racing style, we find the 1368 cm3 turbocharged engine that delivers 205 HP of power. The rear of the car features a winged spoiler, a badge bearing the Abarth logo and a twin exhaust pipe.

The wheel assemblies complete with 17″ light alloy racing wheels are enriched with new floating, perforated and self-ventilated front disc brakes and perforated rear disc brakes, which with the help of a new brake governor further increase performance on the track.
But the true innovation of this new version is the Sadev sequential gearbox with a specific ratio that when combined with a metal-ceramic twin plate clutch reaches absolutely top performance in its category.

On the inside the Abarth 695 “Assetto Corse” contains all of the safety equipment required by FIA regulations, including a roll-bar welded to the body that has been further optimised to improve its torsional stiffness. To make it even lighter – the car weighs about 30 kg less than the previous 500 “Assetto Corse” – the doors have been lightened by using Lexan for the side windows.

The driver’s seat, with specific racing seat and steering wheel, and digital display complete the Abarth 695 “Assetto Corse”, which proves to be a true competition car that is small but aggressive, just like the 500 “Assetto Corse”.

Abarth Punto scorpione
Adrenaline, the gusto of pitting oneself against any kind of challenge, the never-ending search for speed and performance both on the track and facing a downhill race. These are the reasons that led Abarth and Nitro to join forces and work together, the first result of which is the “Nitro powered by Abarth” snowboard.

It is by drawing inspiration from the same shared values that Abarth is presenting a new Limited Edition in Bologna, the new Abarth Punto scorpione. Ninety-nine cars have been made, all distinguished by a two-tone Nero Scorpione livery enhanced by a special matte black paintwork for the bonnet and roof.

The exterior of the car is enriched by special glossy black graphics for roof and bonnet. They ideally reproduce the bottom of the “Nitro Powered by Abarth” snowboard and are achieved with a hand-crafted polishing treatment right at the Abarth&C. factory to achieve a perfect tailor-made customisation.

Powered by a 1.4 MultiAir engine that develops 180 HP (132 kW) at 5750 rpm and with 270 Nm of maximum torque at 2500 rpm, the Abarth Punto scorpione reaches a top speed of more than 216 km/h and accelerates from 0 to 100 km/h in just 7.5 seconds.

Further contributions to performance come from the modified suspension and safety, as well as the adoption of floating, perforated and self-ventilated front disc brakes with oversized four-piston yellow brake calipers, perforated rear disc brakes, high performance front brake pads, front and rear Koni shock absorbers with FSD (Frequency Selective Dumping) valve and specially lowered springs.

The exhaust pipe oversized in the centre segment is also taken from the by now famous “Esseesse” kit.

Inside, this special Abarth Punto scorpione features “Abarth Corsa by Sabelt” black leather seats, with red and yellow stitchings and matte black backrest, homologated and lightened in keeping with the car’s racing spirit. Enriching the interiors are the laser-treated aluminium kick plate with special graphics, the stainless steel pedals with Abarth brand, and the leather steering wheel with double red and yellow stitching, just like the seats and the sporty Jaeger driving instruments.

Accompanying this new Limited Edition is the “Abarth Nitro” winter kit, designed for lovers of speed and the most daring riders, and for snowboard and mountain buffs in magical snow-covered places marked by slopes, cliffs and fresh snow. The “Abarth Nitro” winter kit contains 17″ alloy wheels complete with winter tyres, a snowboard rack with magnetic fastening and a snowboard of the “Nitro powered by Abarth” line.

The Abarth Team Series snowboard features a perfect poplar core to ensure strength and stability. The wood in fact guarantees flexibility, which cushions blows and the harder landings, even on uneven terrains. Speed, power, precision when turning, suppleness and lightness are the qualities that all snowboards should have.

Nitro Abarth Team Series snowboards feature not only bi-lite laminates, dual degressive sidecuts and tip profiles, but also have a special Iso Nano Highspeed surface. This material has been specially researched for this snowboard to guarantee its incredible speed and long life. An Action Camera completes the kit to catch the most highly adrenaline-charged moments behind the wheel and the top performances with the “Nitro powered by Abarth” snowboard. The “Abarth Nitro” winter kit is also available for the Abarth Punto and the Abarth 500, with 16″ steel wheels in the latter case.

Starting today purchasing the official Abarth merchandising is easier. The brand new official e-commerce website is found at www.abarthstore.com, where all Scorpion fans can discover and buy all the official merchandising gadgets and products.

Created in collaboration with the Internet company Triboo, the website immediately grabs the visitor’s attention. Evocative images of the products distinguish the “showcase” placed in a predominant position on the home page and that is continuously updated with new products and promotions.

This section contains the highlighted products and so-called “icons of the month”. In this case, they are the products sold for a period of time or in a limited number of pieces. One example is the eyewear collection produced in collaboration with Italia Independent, with only 150 pieces on sale on the website until January. Another example is the “Nitro powered by Abarth” snowboard, produced from the partnership with Nitro, which is also sold in a limited edition of just 10 pieces starting from 5 December.

A more classic division places the organisation of many merchandising products in various categories of reference in the upper menu: clothing, accessories, gadgets, scale models, sports and toys. It is a simple way to help the customers perform a more “classic” search for their perfect product within the website.

Then for those who love a more “exciting” purchase, a special division is also offered, called “Shop by emotion”. This is where the customer can find the product best suited to his way of experiencing the brand. The products are catagorised in “fans”, “low cost” products for Abarth enthusiasts from time immemorial; “racing”, all of the clothing that totally reproduces that of the world of racing; “premium”, which contains the top of the range products; and lastly the “specialties” category, special products for those who love to experience the brand even in a context other than automotive.

Completing the website are theme promotions and a bi-monthly newsletter to keep all of the Scorpion fans up to date on news and promotions under way.

Online since mid-October 2011, the website has already collected a large number of orders from around the world in little more than one month. Italy leads the classification, followed by Japan, the U.S.A., Germany and Austria.

“Abarth 24h mobile”: new functions for the official mobile application
Following the September presentation at the Frankfurt International Motor Show, the official Abarth application is now enriched with new useful functions. Already available free of charge on “App Store” since September, starting today “Abarth24h mobile” is richer in content and available for all the markets where Abarth is present in Italian, English, French and German.

In the first release, the “Abarth 24h mobile” application presented the first function to its vast community of fans: the “Abarth Community” lets all fans follow all of the official events of the brand, the Abarth Trophy appointments and the rallies of the major clubs in mobility, with the possibility of registering and “being tagged” during the events. In the perspective of a real user interaction-oriented application, the function also lets the user view and share multimedia contents found on all the social networks of the brand.

The new release being presented at the Bologna Motor Show joins the social functions of all the customer-dedicated utilities of the Scorpion brand.

  • Your Profile: allowing you to customise the application with your personal details and the details of your car;
  • “Find your car”: record the position of your parked car, making it easier to find it again thanks to instructions on the route to take to get to it;
  • “Due dates”: to enter due dates relating to your car directly;
  • “Find a dealer”: allowing users to find their nearest Abarth dealer or workshop;
  • “Owner Handbook”: contains a summary version of the handbook for the Abarth 500;
  • “Contact us”: to contact the Customer Services directly;
  • “News and Promotions”: to be constantly up to date on all the news, as well as any promotions under way which can be consulted and viewed, car by car;
  • “Roadside rescue”, to call for assistance in the event of a breakdown or accident

The “Abarth24h mobile” application will also become available for Android technology with the arrival of the new year.

“Make it Your Race”: with Abarth to experience the thrill of a race like a true professional “Not speed, not the thrill. Your goal is the dream”. This is the concept at the heart of the “Make it your race” project with which Abarth has this year involved more than 3500 young people aged 18 to 35 and has let 20 of them make their lifelong dream come true: that of racing on the track in a real race.

Launched in June during the Abarth Race Days, the project allowed 20 worthy finalists to race on a real track together with professional drivers during the last two appointments of the Mugello and Monza Abarth 500 Selenia Trophy. In this way “Make it your race” was a unique opportunity for the young people to experience the thrill of motor sports playing a starring role, plus it was an interesting – and democratic – talent scouting opportunity.

The project was focused on technical and practical training. Out of the young people aged 18 to 35 who successfully passed an online driving-safety test, 70 lucky winners took part in a preliminary advanced driving course at the Abarth Driving Academy located in Varano, in collaboration with de Adamich’s International Safe Driving Centre.

After this first step, the 30 top drivers were selected by a technical panel to take part in a “warm up” (racing driving) course. At this point 20 beginner drivers – rookies – were selected, again by a panel of experts. After getting their ACI-CSAI driving licences, they took part in the 2011 Abarth 500 Selenia Italia Trophy behind the wheel of one of the Abarth 500 Assetto Corse cars dressed up in event media partner Gazzetta dello Sport’s livery.

In order to make the project even more complete by involving motor sport professionals as well in this course, 160 mechanics of the Abarth workshops in Italy were also brought into this course in September. These professionals are the brand’s ambassadors who have the closest contact with Abarth customers.

A group of 30 professionals that attended a specific racing training session, both in theory and practice, at the Abarth plant in Turin and who passed a vehicle access test with the best scores was selected. Of these, the top 10 were selected as support mechanics to assist the Assetto Corse cars of the “Make it your race” drivers.

“Make it your race” does not mean just that, but also “put your all into it”, said Antonino Labate, Business Operation Director of Abarth. And the dream will continue next year. The 2012 edition of the contest is in the works, with the primary goal of teaching responsible driving, and also – and above all – offering common people an extraordinary experience as Abarth fully revives its mission of “democratizing” the genuine thrill of driving.

2012 sporting programmes
Races have always been a part of the Abarth’s DNA: the Abarth trophies continue year after year to attract a growing number of drivers, many of whom are very young and who have the chance to test their strength at accessible costs on the more demanding circuits and in rallies, showcasing their talent in order to become the Motorsport stars of the future.

And so Abarth continues to promote a true “democratization” of races, as the national and international Abarth Trophy editions demonstrate. These promotional championships are dedicated precisely to the small though aggressive and extremely competitive Abarth 500s, and their bent for rallies and the track.

This strategy has been further confirmed by the Abarth ACI/CSAI Formula, which during its first two seasons was participated in en masse by Italian and foreign drivers, all very young, who had the chance to make their debuts in the Motorsport world at low costs with cars of absolute technical merit.

Abarth Trophies
The track Trophies in 2012 will celebrate their fourth season with the Abarth 500 Assetto Corse, which has proven to be top performing and spectacular over these last few years, joined by the new Abarth 695 Assetto Corse. There will be four championships in 2012 in which they will take part. Added to the consolidated Abarth Europe, Italy and Scandinavia trophies will be the first edition in Benelux.

The Italy Abarth Trophy will, as usual, be formed by six appointments of two races each, one of which at Varano de’ Melegari as part of the Abarth Race Days 2012. The other dates will be at Mugello, Misano Adriatico, Imola, Vallelunga and Monza, which as usual will be the event wrapping up the season.

Four of the Italy Trophy events will be valid for the continental single-make championship. The other two appointments will be held at the most prestigious tracks on the European scene, Spa-Francorchamps in Belgium and Dijon in France.

The Scandinavia and Benelux Abarth Trophies will be held with the usual sports format at the major tracks in Sweden, Belgium, the Netherlands and Luxembourg, with one appointment in France on the famous Dijon track.

Like in recent years, new and attractive formulas will be introduced to encourage the youngest drivers to take part in the Italian and European trophy. They will be able to gain access to the competitions at accessible prices due to the cooperation of Trofeo sponsors and the network of Abarth tuning shops. The project that will allow a large number of potential champions to put themselves to the test in a highly competitive championship is therefore continuing.

During the past few years many under 18 drivers stood out in the spotlight as they demonstrated growing progress race after race. This is also why the Abarth 500 “Assetto Corse” has proven to be an excellent training platform: thanks to its superb road holding, it allows the more skilful drivers to effectively prove their worth. The same mission will be entrusted to the brand new Abarth 695 “Assetto Corse” starting with the 2012 edition of the trophies.

The Abarth Trophy will also continue in 2012 in the rallies with the Abarth 500 Rally cars (type approved by the FIA in compliance with the Group R3T regulations) in the limelight; the Abarth 500 Rally Trophy focuses also on young people who can race at low cost. The winners of the 2011 were two young talents, 19-year-old Michele Tassone of Cuneo with Fabio Grimaldi as second driver, at their first sports season. These young men received the added award at the end of the 2011 Trophy of taking part in the Automotive Giro d’Italia at the wheel of an official Abarth 500.

 The Abarth 500 Rally Trophy will maintain its international flavour in its third edition, which basked in outstanding success during the last sports season by including a few of Europe’s most prestigious rallies. For the first time the calendar includes the Ypres, Corsica and Valais rallies, which are added to the Mille Miglia and Sanremo appointments, in addition to the Rally du Chablais in Switzerland.

ACI/CSAI Abarth Formula
During the two racing seasons, the Formula Aci/csai Abarth, the single-seater fitted with a turbocharged 1400 cc Abarth engine tuned by FPT, met with great success with the large-scale participation of Italian and foreign drivers, all very young, attracted by the low running costs and top quality cars.

Special terms and conditions are again planned for the 2012 season to further promote the already healthy levels of youngsters taking part in both series with the aim of identifying world motorsport champions of the future. To this regard, collaboration with the Ferrari Driver Academy continues. From the very beginning it has followed this preliminary Formula, a downright launching pad for the most important categories.

. The 2012 Italian Formula Aci-Csai Abarth Championship will include six appointments, one of which is abroad on the Austrian A1 Ring circuit. Those of the European Series Formula Abarth will total eight, which in addition to the six dates also valid for the Italian title will be held at Valencia and the prestigious Hungaroring circuit.

What’s new in 2012 concerns the format of the events, which will for the first time be broken down into three races.
