Toyota Rust de Winter 4x4

The highly anticipated new General Grabber MT tyre range will be making its high-profile public debut at the 2013 Toyota Rust de Winter 4x4 Jamboree in Limpopo this weekend, from 26 to 28 April.

Following its extremely successful test on the 2013 General Tyre 4x4 African Adventure, which covered 7 300 km through six countries over a period of 18-days, this will be the first opportunity for a wide range of dedicated off-road enthusiasts to see this remarkable new tyre in action.

“The Rust de Winter 4x4 Jamboree is the preserve of hard-core 4x4 enthusiasts, and offers some very challenging and competitive driving conditions that put the drivers, vehicles and tyres through punishing terrain,” says Gishma Johnson, Corporate Communications Manager for Continental Tyre SA.

“When we showed the superb new Grabber AT at Rust de Winter last year, and surprised many people with its performance on the event, we had lots of interest in a more specialised mud-terrain tyre specifically designed for serious off-roading, and the real 4x4 enthusiast market.

“Hence the decision was taken to import the Grabber MT, which not only enables General Tyre to effectively compete in this segment, but will give the brand as a whole far greater market presence and credibility as a serious contender in the 4x4 sector,” Johnson explains.

Imported from North America, the General Grabber MT has three-ply carcass construction that ensures that the tyres can really drive across any terrain Johnson adds.

The 34th edition of this legendary, family-oriented 4x4 Jamboree is organised by the 4x4 ATV Club and based at the Rust de Winter campsite and resort on the banks of the Elands River in Limpopo. The Rust de Winter is celebrating its 22nd year with Toyota as the title sponsor, with Continental Tyre SA proudly notching up its 16th consecutive year as associate sponsor.

This year the main event takes place on Saturday 27 April. Scrutineering and documentation are conducted on the Friday, with prize-giving taking place on Sunday.

The competitive elements include an arduous 55 km mountain route that includes everything from steep rocky ascents and descents to river crossings, loose gravel and mud. It takes approximately six hours to complete, and is certainly not for the faint-hearted!

There is also a challenging and entertaining gymkhana section, with the winners determined by a penalty scoring system throughout the event.

General Tyre has officially entered four vehicles in the 4x4 Jamboree, including two modified V8 bakkies running on the new Grabber MT.

General Grabber MT

The new General Grabber MT is imported from America, where it was specially developed for an off-road racing series. Designed as a heavy-duty mud-terrain 4x4 tyre, it is tailored towards vehicles that spend most of their time off the road.

It is also ideally suited to off-road enthusiasts and adventurers due to its rugged durability and dependable performance in the toughest driving environments.

One of its key features is the three-ply construction used for the tyre carcass, which provides exceptional durability, strength and resistance to sidewall cuts and penetration.

The Grabber MT boasts an aggressive open-pattern tread and shoulder design with stone-ejecting ribs, which affords a high level of traction in mud and rocky terrain, as well as superb self-cleaning capability. Different block sizes in the shoulder area further aid maximum grip in all conditions.

Despite its heavily biased off-road design, its remarkable performance on the tough 2013 General Tyre 4x4 African Adventure proved that the MT provides unsurpassed comfort and low noise levels, as well as impressive on-road traction – especially in the wet. Accordingly, it is equally adept at everyday use, without the drawbacks typically associated with hard-core mud-terrain tyres.

The General Grabber MT is being launched 15 and 16-inch diameters. The 15-inch versions comprise the LT235/75R 15, 31X10.50R 15LT and 33x12.50R 15LT. The LT265/75R 16 is available for 16-inch rims.
