“It might seem strange, but although I took the overall lead today there was nothing particularly special about today’s ‘special’. Maybe 2 or 3 times in the year you do an amazing stage where you ride quickly and navigate perfectly and you are pretty pleased with yourself at the end. But today wasn’t one of those days, just a normal day where I rode ok and made a little navigation error that cost me a little bit of time and made me a little angry with myself. At this point in the rally the overall positions aren’t really very important.
What however was really nice about the stage is that I rode virtually the whole way with my team mate Ruben Faria who did a truly great job. Last night he was second overall, which is a pretty good result by anybody’s standards. But this morning he put any personal ambitions aside, waited for me to come by and then followed me the whole way to the finish. He’s a quick ride who understands tactics and I am very lucky to have him as my team mate. Thank you Ruben!”
