TwoTwo Motorsports/Bel-Ray Racing’s Chad Reed will leave Oakland with the coveted Monster Energy AMA Supercross red plate, after a thrilling second place finish in tonight’s event at the O.co Coliseum.
The Australian got his best start of the year, winning the Nuclear Cowboys holeshot and leading the first nine laps of the ‘Main Event’.
A small error allowed rival James Stewart to pass Reed up the inside, and he soon came under pressure from defending champion Ryan Villopoto.
The Honda rider fiercely defended his position and eventually greeted the chequered flag four seconds ahead of Villopoto.
“We have come away from tonight with some good points and the red plate, but I wasn’t that happy with the way I rode,” Reed explained.
“I got a good start, the track was tricky. The moisture was coming up and the lines changed a little bit.
“It is a very competitive field. We have seen four different winners across four events so I am going to have to work a lot harder if I want to pull away from this group,” Reed stated.
Taking 22 points from tonight’s event sees Reed sit on top of the championship standings with 85 points.
The next event on the 2012 Monster Energy AMA Supercross, an FIM World Championship calender sees the series return to Anaheim’s Angel Stadium on Saturday February 4.
