FORD MOTOR COMPANY OF SOUTHERN AFRICA’S RESPONSE

New vehicle sales recovered slightly in October with Naamsa reporting a 7% increase over the September sales figures. Total industry sales for October were calculated at 59 914 (including AMH sales), which equated to a 6.5% decrease over the corresponding period in 2006. The breakdown saw passenger sales recorded at 38 960 units while the remaining 17 147 units were commercial vehicles.

“As expected sales continue to slow when compared with the figures from 2006 however this month saw a slight recovery over the poor sales experienced in September, largely due to a record rental sales month” explains Jacques Brent, Vice President Sales and Marketing, Ford Motor Company of Southern Africa.

Ford Motor Company sold a total of 6 228 vehicles during the month of October a 7% increase over the previous month. Passenger sales accounted for 3 423 units while 2 805 units were commercial vehicles.

“The introduction of the new Mazda2 has been well received while the recently launched Ford Ranger and Mazda BT-50 Drifter have also contributed to Ford’s positive sales growth,” continues Brent.

Ford Fiesta remains Ford’s top selling passenger vehicle with 604 units sold, marginally more than the Ford Focus on 588 units. The Ford Bantam was Ford’s top selling commercial vehicle at 1 410 units. The newly launched Mazda2 was the top selling Mazda with 514 units sold.

“Trading condition in the new car market remain challenging. In the past 16 months we have seen the interest rate increase by 3.5% with further increases forecast before the end of the year. In light of this we can expect new car sales to continue to level off especially in the dealer channel,” said Brent in closing.
