FORD MOTOR COMPANY OF SOUTHERN AFRICA’S RESPONSE

Total industry sales for the month of June came in at 54 061 (including 4 005 AMH sales). Among other factors, the implementation of the National Credit Act led to a decrease in sales by 13.7% percent on the corresponding month of 2006 and 6% down on the May 2007 figures.

For the fifth successive month passenger car sales have declined in comparison to sales of the same month of the previous year, but is expected to plateau going forward. New commercial vehicle sales however, have increased by a percentage point over the same period, and is expected to remain strong for the balance of the year.

“The introduction of the National Credit Act has presented the industry with some challenges and has had an impact on this month’s sales,” explains Ford Motor Company’s Jacques Brent. “As the industry comes to grips with the NCA, sales are likely to normalise, with a somewhat subdued rate of growth as compared to 2006.”

Ford Motor Company sold a total of 6 173 vehicles during the month of May. Of these 3 205 were passenger cars and 2 968 were commercial vehicles. The Ford Fiesta remained the top selling passenger car for Ford with 732 units sold. The Ford Bantam enjoyed another strong selling month with 1 634 units sold.

“Ford Motor Company sales mirrored those of the industry as a whole, with a 5.6% decline in sales month on month. The introduction of the NCA has not gone unnoticed, however we expect that moving forward the industry will begin to stabilise following an unpredictable second quarter,” concluded Brent.
