Mahindra e2o Electric Car at Johannesburg International Motor Show
The latest vehicle to arrive at the 2013 Johannesburg International Motor Show is the Mahindra e2o. The little hatch was late due to its being held up in Durban harbour. The two-door hatchback has seating for four adults and is powered by a 3-phase induction motor which develops 19kW of power and 92Nm of torque with the energy source being a 72V maintenance-free battery. The transmission is automatic meaning the car is very easy to drive, with its compact dimensions and a 3.9m turning circle making it easy to manoeuvre in the city. Mahindra sees it as the “Future of Mobility.”
The Mahindra e2o has a top speed of over 100km/h and a range of 160km on a full charge, which takes five hours from a standard 15A household socket. One hour of charging will provide a range of 20km. The car also features regenerative braking which reduces wear on the braking system while putting energy back into the battery as you drive.
The pre-coloured ABS body panels that cover the metal framework are dent resistant and since they are not painted it is very difficult to see any scratches on them.
The energy management system and 10 on-board computers provide real-time information to the driver. Self-diagnosis sends alerts in case of a fault being identified. The versatile infotainment system offers a host of media options to choose from and helps plan your daily trips with the built in satellite navigation system.
In case your Mahindra e2o is low on energy you can use an app on your Smartphone to activate a reserve charge to get you going again. The apps can also lock and unlock the car and switch on the air-conditioning system remotely.
Mahindra may consider marketing this car in SA in the future.
