Malibu’s Wakesetter 22 MXZ set to make Huge Waves at the Johannesburg Boat Show
The talk of this year’s Red Bull Wake Open in Tampa, Florida, was the “perfect wake” delivered by the Malibu Wakesetter 22 MXZ. And the good news for South African watersport fans is that it will be on display at the Johannesburg Boat Show at the Johannesburg Expo Centre on August 8-11.
The Red Bull international competition saw the Wakesetter 22 MXZ used for the second year running as the official tow boat for wakeboarding’s biggest event, and to deliver what drivers and wake-riders alike described as “the best wake in the industry.”
“The wake today was bangin’ One big strength about the Malibu wake is that it never curls and it’s just massive, so you can do whatever kind of tricks you want,” said Ralph Derome, champion of the Boat event at the Red Bull Wake Open, which was run over the first weekend in July.
With customisable ballast settings and the ability to fine-tune the PowerWedge, it is possible to set up a perfect wake through a range of speeds.
Apart from its acclaimed wake-boarding attributes, the Wakesetter 22 MXZ is one beautiful boat, with a helm set far back to create plenty of bow room. This open bow model is said to appeal to wake boarders and “lounge lizards” alike, and has maximum accommodation of 15 people, which makes it great for a party boat, or for use in an event like the Red Bull Wake Open, where the tow boat has to carry judges and cameramen as well as do a perfect towing job all weekend.
The 2013 version of the beautiful Malibu also features a device called Surf Gate, which makes for extra fun wake-surfing sessions as the wake is shifted from one side to another on the fly.
To keep the driver in touch with what is happening behind him and also regarding other aspects of the boat, such as trim, there is MaliView, which enables all aspects of the boat’s attitude to be tied together via an LCD screen.
The Malibu Wakesetter 22 MXZ is 22 feet long (6,7 metres), has a 102 inch beam (2,61 metres), and a draft of 27 inches (0,69 metres) it weighs just shy of 2 000 kg, and has an Acme prop, pitched for low-end power. And there is plenty of power!
The latest Malibu 22 MXZ uses the acclaimed 6,2-litre supercharged Monsoon V8 engine rated at 555 horsepower (413 kW).
The Malibu 22 MXZ will be on display at the Johannesburg Boat Show at the Boating International Pavilion in the main boating hall. Boating International are based in Edenvale and are the official importers of Malibu boats in South Africa.
The Johannesburg Boat Show will run at Nasrec Expo Centre, South of Johannesburg, between August 8 to 11, 2013, and is be co-located with the AMID Motorcycle Show and the Outdoor Lifestyle Show.
