General Motors South Africa (GMSA) has announced that the country’s top selling sub-1 ton pick-up, the Corsa Utility, will join the Chevrolet product line-up from the beginning of May 2010. This feature-packed and wildly popular small pick-up joins the Chevrolet Lumina Ute – a vehicle that makes a unique statement as a powerful leisure oriented pick-up – within the Chevrolet LCV product range.

Released to South African buyers in late 2004 the latest generation Corsa Utility immediately went into a back order position as buyers clamoured for this spacious class leading performer from General Motors South Africa. The Corsa Utility joins the Chevrolet brand as the established leader in the sub-1 ton pick-up segment.

At the end of March 2010 the Corsa Utility reached a significant milestone when it reached the 60th month as sales leader in its segment. Sales have continued to build despite global economic pressures with total sales now heading towards 150 000 units.

When the current model entered the market the Corsa Utility had a market share of 28%. By the end of its first full year in the market the little wonder from GMSA held a 41% market share at the top of the sales log in its class. Current market share averages more than 45% in its class.

The Corsa Utility has redefined the sector in terms of its car like interior, load carrying ability, style, specification, and safety. A feature rich specification list across the range provides appeal for the serious business user while providing a comfortable second car option for the private buyer where it fills both utility and leisure vehicle roles.

With the introduction of the Corsa Utility GMSA registered the name “Maxicab” to highlight the spacious interior. The seat travel accommodates the tallest of drivers in comfort without compromise. Equally generous is headroom and shoulder room. Interior storage, often a shortcoming in all pick-ups, is well catered for with a voluminous storage space behind the seats.

“The Corsa Utility has proven to be the benchmark in the ‘B’ segment of the light commercial vehicle sector,” says Malcolm Gauld, Vice-President Sales and Marketing, for GMSA. “It has redefined the half-ton sector of the market and driven interest to a level where the volumes in the segment now account for over 25% of all Light Commercial Vehicle sales,” continued Gauld.

This popular small utility transfers a significant presence in the light commercial market across to the Chevrolet brand where it will continue to build on its solid reputation for service excellence amongst commercial and private users alike. Under the Chevrolet brand GMSA will continue to offer an extensive range of petrol and diesel Corsa Utility models, each matched to defined market needs.

The branding of the Corsa Utility changes as it adopts the famous Chevrolet “Bowtie” but the proven mechanical specification remains unchanged. The core values and solid reputation for mechanical excellence, reliability and durability are still there.

Typically light commercial vehicles have extended life cycles compared to passenger vehicles and this is true of the Corsa Utility. There is still a lot more to come from this model as it enters the Chevrolet family.
