Johannesburg Boat Show Awards

The show opened on Friday August 24 and runs until Sunday, August 26.

The awards were presented by the Gauteng Boating Retailers Association to Leon Prinsloo of Raven Boats, Derrick Levy of Marine and Boating, Don Jarred of Angler Boats, Ronnie  Arenson, who established Water World inGautengand  flew out to receive the award from his new home-base inAustralia, and Peter Lindenberg, multiple South African waterskiing and Formula One powerboat champion.

Lindeberg was also a very successful boating retailer in the 1980s and 1990s, running Lindenberg Marine.

“These are the guys that made the boating industry what it is today,” said Riaan van Helsdingen, one of the chief motivators behind the Johannesburg Boat Show, and a partner in one ofSouth   Africa’s largest boat-building companies, Twin Boats.

“ I think it’s fair to say that without them we wouldn’t have an industry as we know it.”

Lindenberg, who survived two life-threatening accidents in F1 Power Boats, and was clinically declared dead before being resuscitated after his last accident some years ago, now resides in the Western Cape and builds and races historic racing cars.

“I was totally blown away when the organisers contacted me and told me I was getting this award. I’ve been away from the boating industry for close to a decade now, but it was and remains a huge part of my life. It’s great to re-connect with all my friends in boating again.”

A Highlight of the Show on Saturday will be the presence of the SA Olympic Gold Medal-winning rowing team, who will be on hand at the Gauteng Rowaing Association’s stand in Hall Seven. The four gold medallists, James Thompson, Mathew Brittain, John Smith and Sizwe Ndlovu, will be signing autographs at the stand from 2 pm
